I don't know how it happens, but it is mostly grade school behavior.
I like to think that as adults, we are not as prone to this happening, yet I guess there are some immaturities lurking in some that just serve the purpose to cause us pain. 
I'm sorry if you have been hurt, I've seen it a lot in childhood... one reason that I never took any friends.
