I had SPYBOT on my deceased laptop.  Hadn't thought about installing it on this borrowed oldie.  I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks, Sira
I'd heard negative things about Vista before, but not explained in such detail along with options on how to go.  This was one of the most informative comments I've ever received.  You've given me much to think about before I jump back into the computer market.

A word of caution

Beware the Vista! If you think the computer is slow now, just wait until you have Microsoft's newest OS loaded up. It's a disaster. Uses vast amounts of memory, slows everything down, and is so far from user friendly, it's sickening.

Since all new machines come with Vista pre-loaded, you have 3 options:

1) buy a new machine, and put up with the stupid OS, as it. I took this option, and wouldn't recommend it.

2) buy a new machine, delete Vista, and reload one of the older operating systems--2000 is alright, or even 98. You'll have to buy the OS program (unless you happen to have a copy kicking around), and they're pricey. You'll also have to reformat the whole computer, so all your drivers are compatible. Not a complete disaster, but it's time consuming, and can be frustrating if you don't know what you're doing.

3) Rebuild the one you have. By far the easiest method. You can make sure you get what you want, and it'll end up costing you about the same as buying a new machine. Looking back (with 20/20 vision), this is the route I should have taken!

Didn't mean to start a rant in your comment section, but I've just been through an experience much like yours, and didn't have a very good time--hopefully the ranting will be helpful, and not just annoying

Thanks, StrickGold
Actually, things are pretty good now that I've vented a little.  In spite of what might have seemed a gloomy picture, I'm immeasurably better off than I was for more than a year from the middle of 2005 through late 2006.  Then I was on the verge of homelessness without any regular resources at all.  Past history has taught me how quickly things can go bad.
