Two of my daughters are married. We spent about $1,000 on each girl's reception including wedding dress and bridesmaids. I did all the food for one, the other had her helpful mother in law pay for the food as it was held in the groom's hometown. Both receptions went well. It's ridiculous to spend a lot of money on the reception--what's really important is the wedding and the simpler this is the better, as too much "stuff "interferes with the beauty of the union of two people.

Very true. I cannot tell you how many young couple come to me for therapy, just after a few months of marriage - it's not working. The sad thing is that weddings in India cost the bride's family more than they cost the grooms (another tradition). Yet, young women who are educated and seemingly sensible have no qualms fleecing their parents or making demands for expensive weddings.

It's not that I am against tradition, but it needs to make sense in the 21st century, no?

That is so typical of weddings here too. Poor people go into debt, sell their lands and dive into indebtedness. Such a shame.

A big wedding can send a false message of unreal expectation for the marriage. sam

Weddings
As usual, we Americans lose our minds when it comes to weddings. We are out of control. My nephew was married last year. The wedding cost nearly $50,000. The bride and groom were driven in a hummer limosine. There were approximately 400 people there. And, no........the families were not wealthy. My husband and I walked away shaking our heads....
