They are correct, of course, in saying that you should not become irrevocably married to the technique. In modern journalism it is permissible to spread the elements throughout an article, and to leave one or more of the elements out while emphasizing the main elements of a story. It is also true that certain types of writing, such as feature articles in magazines, require a somewhat different approach. But the 5Ws & H remain a good starting point for almost any kind of writing, particularly when you just can't seem to get an article rolling and you're facing a deadline.

I've been taught that in my journalism school

but they are also teaching us to not take it in the literal sense for everything we write because it's not as necessary as it was before.
