I've heard numerous versions of this one over the years. The very adaptability of such a basic tale is part of what makes it so attractive. I probably should preface many of these with the old admonition to "stop me if you've heard this one before." But it's far more fun to just go ahead and spin the tale rather than waste the time trying to avoid the retelling of an old clunker. I suspect the earliest version of this one was in Joe Miller's original joke book. At least I'd like to think so!

Ah, yes, now I've heard that one before, from a famous footballer over here
who was rich but renowned for blowing it all on 'birds, booze and cars... and the rest was wasted!'
