Re: Wavvy Davvy

Justi: I guess it all depends on what you define as offensive.

Wavvy Davvy
I don't think people have to agree in order not to be offended. It is a matter of civility. Disagreement brings about growth; offense bring obstinate behavior stymying growth.

Re: Justi

There will always be someone offended by what you say.  Not everyone agrees on everything.  My opinion is people are just overly sensitive today not just about religion, politics and sports but everything else as well.  Free speech isn't offensive to me; some people's reactions to it are offensive.

Justi we have the same dilemmas here. Our whole democaratic way of life
has gradually given away over my life time. People, groups abuse the right of free speech, of general freedoms, and then laws are placed to protect us but another thread has broken. I have no resolution I'm afraid. Just sorrow.

They deny the fact it offends us. It is like blackboard scratching. Thanks for the read. Take care.

justi,
Yes, we have misintrepreted, "free speech."

Justi...

I really like your thoughts on this  ...I think one too many of us have bent and twisted the definition of free speech (abused the right to free speech) simply to accomodate or validate our personal mind sets.  I'm guilty of having done so without realizing (until later) what I had done.

If people want to abuse others and use free speech as their excuse...so be it.  All I can say is I won't be jumping on THAT band wagon!

Justi
It's (free speech) the classic example of the double-edged sword!

Writer of Light
Thank you so much you said that so well. Political Correctness puts constraints on how our churches can teach their believers how to not behave in the secular world. It is a very unfair declaration of freedom.

posted by Justi on May 23, 2007 at 8:58 PM | link to this | reply

There is indeed free speech, but with two constraints
  1. Responsibility for one's exercise of that freedom and the consequences thereof; and,
  2. The unfortunate constraint of political correctness that is used to stifle non-liberal speech on our campuses.

Free speech costs a lot in some cases.

Justi
The one thing I hate the most about "free speach" is when it is used to abuse others.
I don't know if there is some peaceful answer to that problem.
