You're from the Ukraine, Troosha?

Not sure how I could have missed that before.

Small world.

Mademoiselle
Growing up with a Ukrainian background, I, too, had some “family secrets” I tried to keep a secret. My friends would come over and wonder why my house always smelled – aromas of boiled cabbage or garlic sausage. For some stupid reason I used to envy my white-anglo friends but now I’m proud of my olive skin and my hankering for boiled carbs. And "cheap" was simply a way of life....

It sure was, Scriber.

In fact, I can still feel its searing sting.

That cupon clipper taunt was too cruel...

People don't have air conditioning in the UK, Ichii?!!

Man, I thought you guys were a civilized nation?

Or, uh, group of nations or whatever.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 16, 2007 at 5:10 AM | link to this | reply

Hmm

Very soon the UK will be joining the world of air conditioning, I think. But our weather's been so crazy lately, it goes from a few days of sweltering heat to a week of torrential rain and freezing cold nights. Bizarre.

Sadly, Maerchenzaehler, it wasn't even all that long ago, actually.

In fact, I can still almost taste the bitterness which once welled up inside me, as I doodled drawings of deadly revenge in my fluffy pink notebook.

Out of the mouths of Children
You're right, children aren't very creative when they are taunting others.  It's nice to know European children have this problem too.  Sorry it happened to you all those years ago.

Thank you very much, Kabu.

And yes, kids can be quite beastly.

Of course, then again, so can adults.

Yeah, the humidity is what really causes most of the discomfort, Masky.

That's why you so rarely hear anyone in the Sahara complaining.

Well, it's one of the reasons, anyway.

Thanks for stopping by, riri.

happy airconditioner day

Madem...
The summers here are VERY humid.  If we had just hot, dry heat I'm sure I could go longer before I turn the A/C on.  I hold out as long as I can...then the kids start complaining and on it goes!

I take all my used air conditioners to the forest. When I have 99999, I will turn them on and cool the equator. Then I will not buy any Hair-Conditioners

Only because most people know not to eat the fish sticks, bandana ... I should have, too.

It was a freshman-type mistake.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 12:45 PM | link to this | reply

You have delicate health in general... and "cheek bones", too.. I suppose..
Anyways, I bet no one else (who also ate at the cafeteria) threw up besides you.

posted by bandanafish on May 15, 2007 at 12:42 PM | link to this | reply

No. Not really.

How does vomiting make me "delicate"?

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 12:35 PM | link to this | reply

damn. Really "should" skip school.
p.s. are you okay, though? Feeling better after throwing up? I hope so.

posted by bandanafish on May 15, 2007 at 12:31 PM | link to this | reply

You threw up? That's terrible, now you REALLY to skip school
tomorrow, because you are so delicate (like a queen.)

posted by bandanafish on May 15, 2007 at 12:30 PM | link to this | reply

My cat is the same way, bandana ...

except for the part about being a dog.

P.S. I just threw up. I knew I never should have eaten those fish sticks in the school cafeteria.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 12:24 PM | link to this | reply

My dog (now sleeping next to my feet) is so spoiled.
He can't stand hot weather. When I tried to play with him earlier today, he ran back in the house (refusing to play). He can't survive without AC.

p.s. not that you remind me of my dog... of course.

posted by bandanafish on May 15, 2007 at 12:18 PM | link to this | reply

I meant in terms of someone else trying to kill him, strat.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 12:11 PM | link to this | reply

Actually, he had that covered, too, Mademoiselle --
he was in medical school at the time, the cheap son of a bachelor. He's now one of those guys that chases freaky diseases all over the world with the CDC. Cool job, but kinda scary.

posted by strat on May 15, 2007 at 11:55 AM | link to this | reply

Well, only because it would have been a really major job to remove it, strat.

P.S. Of course, your cousin failed to take into account the potential medical bills.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 11:12 AM | link to this | reply

It's all right, Mademoiselle. At least your dad didn't disconnect it.
He just made it a capital crime to use it.

My cousin, afraid we would run up long distance bills and electricity, had his air conditioning and phone disconnected for a weekend in the middle of July in Charleston.

Looking back on it, he was probably right.

posted by strat on May 15, 2007 at 11:06 AM | link to this | reply

Well, we had it, Foliage, but couldn't use it.

He only died 3 years ago, so we were all mid-to-late teens by then.

Mademoiselle
Oh dear!  Well, at least you had air conditioning while growing up.  We didn't, but we almost got to spend a summer in Siberia.

As opposed to the St. Petersburg in Wisconsin, Rcky?

Hahaha to Hazel's comment and Madame...you need to get out more!
Oh, St. Petersburg...Fla? That's STILL the East Coast! LOL

clarification:
The ability to get away with being cruel, I mean.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 10:07 AM | link to this | reply

Kids can be so cruel, Hazel.

Of course, then again, that's one of the only good things about being a kid, actually.

P.S. It's 75 here right now, but expected to go up to 80.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 10:06 AM | link to this | reply

I don't think so, Rcky.

To my knowledge, I've only left the east coast twice in my entire life (and both times, involuntarily, to St. Petersburg).

Hahaha, I know you wanted it Madame! Now just file it away as useless
information, unless of course you move out West in the Summer! LOL

posted by RckyMtnActivist on May 15, 2007 at 9:57 AM | link to this | reply

Oh, okay then, Rcky.
Thanks for the info, anyway.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 9:53 AM | link to this | reply

Madame, it's a huge box that sits on top of your roof and works

just like AC that comes in through the vents. It uses water for cooling. They cannot be used in humid areas, that's why you never heard of them. I lived in NY and know how humid it is there.

posted by RckyMtnActivist on May 15, 2007 at 9:45 AM | link to this | reply

What's a "swamp cooler", Rcky?

Like a giant fan?

P.S. I guess maybe my father was right, then. However, there's no turning back now.

posted by Mademoiselle on May 15, 2007 at 9:41 AM | link to this | reply

What a funny story Madame (Minus your dad's death). I HATE

air conditioning, it always made me sick. However, out West where it is dry most everyone uses swamp coolers instead. It is cheaper than AC, better for the environment and better for you health, skin and hair.
