Ever had a bat fly into your bedroom? We don't have insect screens in England, and one summer night we had the window open.

Ell is a bit like you, mneme.   She will swerve onto the opposite side of the road to avoid a squirrel because it is 'one of God's creatures.'   When she sees a slater or spider she takes a paper towel and squishes the insect.  When I remind her that it is 'one of God's creatures,' she shrugs and says 'tough.'

I've met Palmetto bugs in Miami.. I've heard you can hit them with a shovel and they just keep flying...!

Hi, thanks for thinking of me. It was a noisy weekend, I've been working on my research, and inspiration has stalled... apart from that I'm doing okay.

Popping in to say hello.  You've not posted for awhile.  All okay?

marie-claire, bonjour..!

I'm glad to see you back and I would love to hear about your trip. I emailed a little while ago so I will be in touch later this evening.

One of the things I have found is that everyone is used to these pests and no-one seems to cast aspersions on the housekeeping!  But the insect life was a lot to get used to at first, being a pom.  The biggest flying things I ever had to worry about were fat bumblebees.

I think I'm pretty restrained, you should see my son with the spray.. he hates them more than I do, especially if they try to fly away.

I know I didn't imagine it, we just didn't get cockroaches in the good old UK. I don't remember any mice either, in our hermetically-sealed, double-brick and double-glazed house. Sometimes I feel like a pioneer.

That must have been a surprise - we get those too, but I don't worry too much unless they lose a leg or something if I try to shoo them out.

Bonjour! How are you???

I found just the thing for such unsightly visitors... they usually crawl out of the woodwork when you have an important visitor and ruin your reputation as a wonderful housekeeper, (just kidding!).

Just last night, when my dear light brown variety cockroach visited the bathroom and decided to take a bath, with no water that is, I have a brainwave (a rather cruel one I might add), I dowse it in "Simple green" household cleaner, and it works a treat! I don't know if the poor thing suffered, but the sticky liquid immobilised it for life or death I should say. So next time, just reach for the nearest household cleaner. I works! any brand will do. I thought I should share my cruel tips with someone.

Must catch up on the news some time. (By the way, I had a wonderful trip in the States, want to know more?.

Good riddance to bad rubbish - bloody cockroaches.
We have ants- that's about it, luckily, although in a rented house there lived a mouse. Well actually several - but mice wouldn't have rhymed!

I hate cockroaches the most!  I had one fall onto my neck once.  I've also had a praying mantis crawl up onto my arm while out on the patio of a restaurant.

If I can get them outside without too much trouble I will, but you can't take your eye off them because they hide. This one was unlucky.

This one probably just walked in from the garden and hid. My husband had been digging out shrubs and moving things around in the garden - that usually gets them moving. Funnel webs too.

Thanks - I was wondering if cotton soup is the same as hay stew... you start it off on the stove and then put in a box of hay to finish cooking itself slowly all day. Or was I dreaming?
Spiders don't scare me, I just have to be careful they aren't poisonous.

I don't think I'd like to see the spider that would scare that cockroach.

I once wrote a humoprous poem about how I tried nonviolence with roaches!
But it is helpful to the species here that we do take a moment to consider their lives, even as the need to fumigate and treat our homes for these lesser siblings is a health concern/priority. shalomfromneil

Grasshoppers are cute.  Cockroaches are disgusting.   Spiders scare me.   I'm glad that a pest man comes once a month and hides a little dollop of something under my kitchen and bathroom cabinets.    I started a recipe blog titled "You Asked For It."   The recipes you asked for are there.
