Re:mneme
Thank you, we do do a lot of good in the world. A lot of Americans give a lot personally to poor all over the world. Yet those we give to hate us.

I see a lot of criticism on America and some of it may or may not be justified. What I don't see is the other side of it, which you have so rightly brought out here. America does a lot of good in the world, a lot of charity, and that's too often forgotten. Good post.

Re:Taps
That is so true. you can't out give God He will make the sun shine on your path and the stars come out at night when you give to others with a giving heart.

I would rather be one of the giving and the doing even if I am derided for doing so. It is true that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Justi......
Our country is not perfect. We had a government that once condoned slavery.....we had the horrible treatment of the native people here.....we have certainly had our share of short-sighted and corrupt politicians over the years.
But perfection is not a prerequisite for love. Just as each of us is a work in progress throughout our lives........our country is also a work in progress.
Our country is a problem solving country......a blunt and straightforward country.....and a heroic country that has done more to bring freedom and opportunity to the entire world than any country in history could have dreamed of.
And there are times when we've made a mess of things.
But I am willing to match up the good done by America to the bad any time!
Patriotism is love. If you want to feel more love for your country.....look for the best within it.....focus on that.....speak to that.....honor and appreciate that.....and nurture and support that. You can do all of this while knowing full well all of the weakness and tragedies of your country.
If you want to decrease or kill the love you have for your country.......look for what you don't like.....look for its weaknesses and flaws......and look for its failures and shortcomings. Focus on only that.....speak to only that, dwell on and criticize only that.......and help your country to grow more of it through criticism, gossip and contempt.
There is a great momentum that has built over the years in America toward the latter. It is being fed and shepherded intensively by the Left and to some degree by some factions of the Right as well. I don't think that this is good for anyone........I have come to have as little patience and tolerance for those who actively promote and engage in it as I would if they were trashing any of the people in my life whom I love.
But I think perhaps, that many on the Left feel about their country like those whose parents abused them and broke their trust do towards those who did them such profound harm. They believe that their country has betrayed them, abused them, neglected them, or at least some number of their countrymen.
Sorry for the length of my comment...but I'm in one of those moods this morning...
Just my humble opinion.......

Thank you for this comment. I agree with you. There was a lot of dirt on every side and a lot of good came from it, then a lot of that got tuned around on a dime of Socialism I think. Loved your comment think it is right on.

As far as non-Americans, I think a lot of their hatred of us, comes from one of the "7 Deadly Sins" - envy!
As for the self-hating Americans, they're a little bit harder for me to understand - maybe these people only see the ignoble things that some of our ancestors engaged in - slavery, then segregation, the treatment of the American Indians, who by the way, weren't all "innocent angels" themselves, etc,...and they (for some reason), just can't acknowledge the good things - maybe they are pessimists, and they would have hated any country they were born and raised in - I honestly don't know.
