These are huge, huge questions.
Too much for me (or anyone) to fully answer in a comment.
But this being Blogit and since you asked, I will give a partial answer. Religion and reformation (if you mean something like the Enlightenment) are ways people have dealt with difficult questions about life: what it means and what they should do with it. People have used religion and reformation to do good and they have used it to do evil (reformation, when it becomes revolution, can be good or bad -- American revolution, good; communist revolution in Russia, bad).
I would say reformation has given us huge progress on many fronts, including the acceptance of scientific theories such as evolution by the church (at least, the Catholic Church), the extension of voting rights to women and ethnic minorities, the separation of church from state. In nations that have made these changes, the oppression you refer to is not nearly as severe as it once was.

I truly understand your feelings, but after (however?) many years. B.C., while there is still (sadly) oppression, there is also still joy and beauty - you have to remember to see the positive things as well - and admire our (the human race's) relentless capacity to keep living - and even getting better, in some areas! I don't know if these thoughts of mine are inspired by the fact that I happen to be a Libra, but I do (at least in my mind), try to strive for, and recognize the importance of - balance.
I wish they had a Libra-scale emoticon!
