We in India have the circumcision done at least within eight years time
but according to our belief it is better if it is done according to the Biblical time that is within 8 days after birth of the male child .Thanks.

Is 8 the 'normal' age for this in your country? This seems much more civilized. --Joy!Mary

Ive also wondered about this.Ive heard people say its for hygienic purposes
A girl I was in hospital with having my almost 14 year old son said they did it because when men go to war washing facilities are poor and infection becomes rife among soldiers with foreskins.Alot of stuff that happened in the old testament was sort of made null and void by the new testament or the coming of Jesus. For eg theres a long list of foods we were not allowed to eat in the old testament. But Jesus said it is not what goes into a mans mouth that makes him unclean but what comes out of it.So maybe he was circumcised as a Jewish lad but didnt think the practice was important especially if it had its roots in spiritual belief or practice.

I don't know any real reason that this was practiced in the past.
Today however, I know that it is said that it is good for health reasons.
You are fortunate that your father took you somewhere that was good to get this sort of thing done.
After the doctor circumcised my son, in the hospital...the nurse brought him to us (Me, B and my mom) and showed us. She said she didn't understand why he didn't come and talk to us...considering that it appeared he had screwed it up.
For the first so many years of his life, we weren't sure if we would have to take him back in to be re-circumcised. I would have been pissed. I think at that point, I would have had to sue somebody.

Afzal, it is a painful test we put our sons through
i heard many scholars say the circumcision is hygienic and it can prevent the spread of sexual diseases. However, even the text you found in the bible does not state the "why" only that it was done and still done by both Muslims and Jews. why the Christians don't have this tradition is a mystery especially that Jesus was born a Jew and must have been circumcised too.
