Afzal
Being a good person is not something we can learn in school, it's something that has to come from within us.

Now, real education, according me me (well, others more famous too) it
means helping LEARNERS discover as much about themselves and thr world as possible. And thinking skills are crucial, but poorly tught or modeled. Most of modern society depends on unfirmity, not independence, much against the rhetoric and propaganda we hear every minute. Otherwise, shoppers would not be a mob of gullible wage-slaves! We are told what to eat, drink, watch, movies to support, values to cherish by the commercial interests in the first place. (OK, off I go........away from Hyde Park)

Oh my, where do I begin?

I cannot speak for your corner of the world, however history suggests that as man became more civilized, education was horded by those in power(usually the church or the ruler).  As our civilizations evolved education became available to those who reached out and took it.

The purpose of state organized education(IMHO) is not much different than it was in the past, control and indoctrinate the masses.  You are correct in the sense that families preferred for their offspring to continue in their stead, however the church was more inclined to seek out the brightest stars and pluck them from their families to avoid any taint that might follow them into religous learning.

Moral education?  I do not believe that anyone needs to be 'taught' what is right and what is wrong.  We all know these things naturally, what we need to be taught is that we will have taught is that we will have to bear the consequenses when we do something that we know is wrong.  When children learn there is no consequence to their actions they do whatever pleases them at the moment without regard to right or wrong.
