Of course you're right Dolls.. the commercial conformity doesn't necessarily remove cultural differences.

Oh robdon67
I don't think we need too worry much. While the world becomes smaller, cultural diversity is very much alive and kicking - and takes on more evolved forms. When India became a part of the global economy in 1991, most good thinking people (like you!) thought we would go to the dogs. But, it encouraged a kind of revival in some many fields even we couldn't imagine. Have hope and faith.

Good post
I still think that despite the commercial similarities countries always retain cultural differences of their own. For example :I live in England, huge differences in attitude to work, mannerisms, meal preferences etc just across the Channel in France.

The knowing and understanding of the different qualities in other cultures and the openness to being enriched by what is seen as foreign or different or even challenging is good soul creating stuff BUT if the world is becoming smaller in such a way that it is being reduced to a lowest cultural common denominator - an easily understood and saleable package deal where all that's different and foreign and exotic is stripped away because it can't be upsized or consumed with a regular serve of fries - then we are all the poorer for it.

I would say this a good thing. The smaller the world becomes, the better we should know and understand each other. That would be a good thing, don't you think?
