You are too funny!
Pet mills are bad news.  Our cat, "Mika" was rescued from one.  But we loved your story!

Majroj,
Unfortunately, all the pet stores that "sell" animals, especially puppies are from puppy mills. The question is, though one would most likely be purchasing a sick puppy (though they look cute and cuddly in the store and have a so-called health certificate) is it better to buy them to at least give them a good home, or not? I always tell my clients NEVER to buy from the pet stores, but sometimes I wonder...what will happen to them if they're never sold? :(    I can't believe they are still able to just "sell" animals the way they do. I have seen footage and reports from PETA (NOT that I am ALL for PETA) but one girl posed as a new employee to the actual pet store in this post and she took a hidden camera with her. Ya don't even want to know what the "back" looked like...ya know, the sections that the customers DON'T see. Very sad.

(Psst! Hey, Slick, wanna gerbil?)

If you want a gerbil in the most populous state, you HAVE to get it underground.

I got my black gerbils in Nebraska as overstock from the University Medical Center, but they were not well-mannered (no slur on the university).Free.

What burns me worse than "shithole" pet stores are slick-looking stores which sacrifice the animals' well-being and often the employees') to maintain an appearance. That, and puppy mill stores........AND shitholes.

Thanks 4 the comments, but...

I guess I felt a little guilty about the situation, but if you could have heard what a real, rude DICK this guy really was, you would not have been able to resist either. Oh, and the pet store that he purchased this hamster from is a REAL SHIT HOLE. I may not like most pet stores that sell dogs, cats, snakes, exotic birds, etc. but, of course, where else is one to buy a hamster or gerbil?  HOWEVER, the man's main complaint turned out (which I should have stated before) that HIS 16 year-old daughter and her boyfriend bought the animal!! When she got it home, she had no cage, no food, and no knowledge of it's proper care! This man was upset that it didn't COME WITH THE CAGE AND FOOD! He wasn't even upset that the "seller" never even asked if this girl had permission from her parents, a proper place to keep it, food to feed it, or any knowledge what-so-ever about a hamster. This guy was ONLY pissed off that his 16 year old brought home a hamster that she paid over $60.00 for!!

I don't have a problem with those purchasing a "pocket pet" from a pet store, but I DO have a serious problem with filthy, un-kept, un-healthy atmospheres housing any kind of animal...such as this one. This guy just happened to be not only a jerk himself, but didn't even bother to LISTEN to me when I called and said, "This is H, returning your call from the Animal Hospital..." He was just hell-bent on screaming and yelling at me. Oh well. Such is life!

Bad Spitfire. Bad Spitfire.

Great story.  But in all seriousness, where would one purchase a hamster or gerbil or guinea pig if not through a pet store.  I have never seen any private breeders of gerbils.
