I think some people are born with a gift for understanding people's problems and being able to see the bigger picture.I too became an unqualified 'counsellor' to family and friends and school kids in my job.But because I wasn't trained I couldn't detach and ended up struggling with depression myself.Ive done short courses since then and I' m now more aware of not letting myself get emotionally involved and I'm actually toying with the idea of doing a degree in the field.It is good to be able to help others.

I'm sure that you have lots of experience in nonjudgmental problem solving and recognizing diversity with regards to culture, ethnicity, values and religion.  But, I am surprised that it is not necessary to have a degree or diploma in applied social science or psychology for counselling for pay.
