- Go to MY DAY TODAY finding the truth about SAINT VALENTINE
I believe
That the reason he was in prison was that he was secretly performing marriages, when the emperor had banned them.
It isn't unusual that you found a pagan holiday hiding behind a Catholic myth, you'll find one behind each of the Holy holidays perpetrated by the Catholic church. They wanted to draw the Roman people away from Paganism, so they managed to overlap all of the Pagan celebrations with their own. This way the common man didn't lose out on the good times, they celibrated much the same thing, only now it was sanctioned by their church instead of the pagan gods of ancient rome.

OFFBEATS,
Valentine's day celebration dates back to the ancient times when the 'Feast of Lupercal"was celebrated in the honour of the Roman God of Feritiity.According to a time worn custom , on the eve of Lupercalia (14th of Feb) a ritual of 'name drawing' was followed, during which a young man dreew the name of a girl from the lot, who was to be his sweetheart for the whole year.Romans ,has , of course has always made the world go roundabout but we must say that these Romans knew how to make it official.
Since then, this day 14th Feb has been considered as the day of Cupid . the mischievous son ofVenus-ther Roman Goodess of love.

Very interesting...I have always heard it is celebrated because of Eros (Godess of Love) or Cupid...
