I'm so glad that the second installment is here for me to continue. I hate waiting for really good posts to continue, and this is one of those good ones.

Sir
Your descriptions of the alleys made me feel a bit claustrophobic. I can't imagine shuffling down one sideways only to reach a dead end and have to shuffle on back.
On to your next post!

Each time I read your posts such as this, I always wonder if you are actually a retired History Professor.

Like Tonyzonit said, the description of the alleys is great!
I could feel the buildings closing in on me and picture myself looking up and barely being able to see the sky.

Well written ET - you can really picture those dark alleys.
I wonder if they bothered to wipe they feet on the mat before entering their rooms, or if they just trudged the filth in willy-nilly! 'Ey, get those bloody boots orf, Charlie!' You can just picture the scene...

actually we do have it a lot better than they did
people don't realize how bad things can be -- or were
but many people are never satisfied no matter how well they have it.

i remember money
I remember american comics making fun of the tuppence and thrupence and all that stuff that seems foreign to our ears although it is still English.

Babe
The first definitely identifiable Ripper murder occurred on the August Bank Holiday of 888, and although the last took place ( I think ) a month later, some possible Ripper Murders occurred in Canada in the 1890s.
The sites of the murders remained unchanged when I was a boy in the 1930s, and I believe that the Kearley and Tonge warehouse in Mitre Square, where my niece worked in the 1950s is still there.

Interesting "project" or piece of research you've taken on. I love sinking my teeth into something that catches my interest. And you can do it all at your desk (although I miss the smell of a library).
