- Go to Don't Be A Writer Is My Advice
Don't be a writer, or artist, or
actor, or musician. Go ahead and get it all out in college, and then let reality set in? It's the way life is, but it doesn't hurt to dream, right. I'm still dreaming. Take care

Yep, there's wisdom in there all right...
If they must write, they will write, but I do agree that it's risky just writing for a living only. The only way I think I could feel secure enough to do that was if I had a bestseller or two and then decide to stay home for a while to see if I had any more bestsellers in me.

Hi Azur-
I am curious. I saw your comment to Julia about florid prose.
So many of the books that are praised these days as excellent books, literature, whatever
are so "dense" and descriptive. I can't read them. I just don't have the patience. I prefer the "easier to read" books for entertainment because I am usually too tired to put up with the "good stuff." What do you think of the books that are hailed as literature these days? How do you think they compare to the classics? I read those too, and I think the classics are still easier to read. And, actually, I can still list ones that I enjoyed.
Oops, that got awfully longwinded. Aaaah, apparently I can write that way when I am tired even if I can't read it!

Azur; This piece has me thinking. If the children have a talent, it will out anyway. Does having to make money with their talent take away from their enjoyment of it? Mmm..perhaps I should be helping my own children with their skills.

I think they will find their own way - I feel it must be one of the hardest careers there is, though.

I never wrote for a living, only for fun. In looking back, now I wish I had tried it just to see what would happen. I have a nephew that is trying it. He's 26 and just moved to New York. So far he has had enough success that he has great expectations. I am following his career with much interest.

Follow your dreams, too!
I have been giving very serious consideration to getting my books published by a small press or even self-publish. You may want to consider that as well. The reaction to my readings at open mike nights has given me some confidence that my books would sell as long as I can sell it for something affordable and still make a decent profit.

Your point is very sensible, and IMHO accurate. If they love something
and you tell 'em all the risks and potential disappointments, and they go for it anyway, then their determination and their joy in the work itself will be a payoff.
The thing is, they do what you do, not what you say. As you keep working and thinking and focusing on your passion, and they follow your example. I guess the trick is helping them to find their own passion, be it writing or any other thing...

We needed more writers when one writer couldn't blanket the world
and people read instead of watching tv or Blogit.

azur--
you hit the nail on the head, if they truly feel the passion to write, they will, regardless of what anyone says about how difficult it might be to make a living from it. Of course I think that is probably true of any profession, if you decide not to go into it because someone told you it would be difficult, then it's not for you in the first place!

azur, tell them anything and good luck with their listening skills.
I can't think of one thing that my children have ever done because they listened to me.
Except that, I did repeat a thousand times a year, " You will not marry nor have children until you are 28" and three out of four listened.
So, what is most oft repeated seems to make it into ear canals. I would not give them career advice. The one time that I did, both sons, don't go into the military, I said, and they both did go into the Navy anyway, I was not listened to. So, I just backed out of those conversations or listened only.
I tell the grandchildren to immigrate, or, at least they claim that I said that to them. I don't recall and must have really been upset by the news channel or something......Immigrate, can you imagine? Cute. I wonder if any of them will remember when older and if they will immigrate, hmmmmmm......They said that I suggested Perth.

I don't think it's negative
I think it's realistic. My mother did all she could to discourage me but there was nobody that could have stopped me... which tells me I'm where I belong. Your children will also find their own path, regardless of what warnings you give them. Keep them informed of the realities and be there for support in whatever they choose.... then again, that's the .02 of someone without kids so take my advice for what it's worth.
