By the way Ariel, when you said to move to Andalucia, you didn't think we'd
consider it did you? At this point, the Antartic is preferrable to our current state of affairs.
Doing a bit of googling, but would greatly appreciate any info you could throw my way or direct me in the right direction. Bearing in mind we're a young couple (30's) with two daughters (11 & 15months), absolutely no assets, and poorer than indebted churchmice. He's the chef (has worked since a teen in hospitality industry) me the secretary or pretty much jack/jane of all trades. My eldest doesn't want to move outside Europe if we can avoid it.
P.S. Sorry to leave this on your blog, feel free to delete this comment, and I understand if you don't have the time. Thanks for reading.

I know also that there was a variation of the clothesline, pretty much
a bench people would sleep sitting up, all crammed in together & held in position by a rope or tie stretching from end to end for the night.

Good heavens above!!! Flannel Foot!
When I was a kid, back in the early 1930s there was alleged to be a burglar called Flannelfoot ( Flannel Foot ) an' if yer didn't watch out he'd getcha!!!
Clearly an urban legend, like those that have been discussed here lately.
Mind you, Springheeled Jack was a real fella. I think! or maybe not! Never met him meself, 'cos I was a little angel, see?LOL

Tony
The poor devils slept on a clothes line 'cos they couldn't afford the 3d for a shared bed, so they paid a penny for the line.
Thanks for lurking in on you way to your 3d bedLOL

I remember a group called the Lurkers.
Interesting stuff - especially odd though that people would pay to sleep standing up over a washing line. Why? Too late to ask them now, I spose!

Ariel,
a wonderful snapshot of of a bygone era, an era that appears far more romantic then it probably was in all its grim reality. Nonetheless, the lurker's artfulness compares favorably with today's clumsy efforts, certainly here in Toronto...
Pat B mentioned Peeping Toms. Years ago, when I lived in London for a while, there was one of those in the neighbourhood (Clapham Common), and people had another expression for him - 'flannel foot', which I thought was neat...

I thought Lurkers -- at least on Blogit and in chat rooms -- are those who
do not comment, but lurk around "listening" to the conversations. Or in the real world they were peeping toms in waiting.
One panhandler near my old workplace said she just got mugged and needed the price of a bus ticket to get home. Home was $15 or $20 away. I've had 'em tell me they are soldiers just back from Iraq who need a little help getting home. The story loses its shine after you've see the same "lurker" on the same corner three days in a row...
