I didn't see the TV series with Colin Firth, but quite enjoyed this production overall.

Wiley,
Thanks - I quite enjoyed it too :) Pierre Trudeau seemed a decent sort as well, from what I remember so I'm not surprised he and Ford were friends.

yeds it was a bit of a clanger wasn't it.. I like your conclusion that the producers were off on holidays - imagine the carpeting when they get back. But then, it's bad enough putting a picture of Saddam with the noose around his neck on the front page of the Sunday papers. Quite unnecessary... I wouldn't want young children to see that.

Muser,
I was overwhelmed by your touching comment when I saw it yesterday.. by the end of your poem I was in tears, but not sad, just emotional from finding my thoughts put into words by someone who understood...thank you so much for all your good wishes....I am working on a response ( I hope a poetic one..!) and just want to say how glad I am we met and became friends.

Canada loved Mr. Ford. He was responsible for getting Canada a seat at the G8 I believe. He and Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau were good friends. Loved your dance in the laundry room luv. Have a wonderful 2007 my friend.

Hi Mneme
Following your Gerald Ford observations, on British TV last night they had a series of impressionists doing famous people satirically. One of the characters portrayed was Saddam Hussein, moaning about having to spend forever in jail after the court case was over. It didn't really work since the whole worlsd had been watching the pictures of his walk to the scaffold only a couple of days before. I was surprised they didn't take that sketch out. I suppose there was no way the gap could be filled at such short notice, when all the programme producers were probably abroad somewhere, drunk. Happy New Year, anyway!

mneme.. a small token of my appreciation for all your good posts...
mneme, meeting you here on Blogit and feeling such a strong connection and friendship with you has been one of the delightful, unexpected perks of joining a writer's Blog. You are the inspiration for this poem...a small token of my appreciation for all the good reads I have found here. I hope that PURE HAPPINESS...the kind that makes one giddy and laugh often...and old fashioned, sweep you off your feet ROMANCE find you in this new year!

Happy Heart Sad Heart Twin Memories

I was surprised when you
commented
on what I had written
a long poem, I think...
I didn't know you then
I didn't know I would eventually
feel so very close to you
that I would feel
so connected to you
through our memories
ones not shared...
and yet remembered
as if they were
you were new in this writer's community
I was delighted to have a new reader
especially one who really seemed
to like my poems
I visited your Blog to read
to reciprocate your kindness
how could I have known
that reading your words
would sear open
a part of my mind
I thought sealed
how could I have expected
to find a chapter in my life
written in one of your memories
how did you come to write
one of my stories
and call it
one of yours
how is it that you can describe
so perfectly so intimately
my pain...
the pain I once felt...
yet you describe it as yours
reading your words
is like reading my own
we began a dialogue of comments
in which
I continue to be amazed
at the parallels in our lives
my heart goes out to you...
each time you write
a new chapter
in a story that
could be my own
a story I could write
a story I know too well
somehow we seem to share
a broken heart story
in which we know
the ragged pain of heartache
you describe it so well
I remember exactly how it felt
through your words
not a tear all at once...more like
tiny nicks from some invisible
razor-sharp implement
constant little pricks
of hurt
spawning constant pain
that color one's world
bittersweet
never really happy
but not completely sad
just always
on the edge
of sadness
tears at the ready
falling at a moment's notice
every day gray...
rainy
a chill of the heart...
always feeling alone
even in a crowded room
every day
a day in mourning
smiles shrouded in frowns
nerve endings numb
going through the motions
living a lie
with someone
no longer loved
love once vibrant
love that grew weak
so sad to watch it struggle
to watch it dying
to see it dead
and I was
and you are
a great pretender
almost twins
almost one
almost the same
yet two
I hope for you
a happy ending
like mine...

It sounds like a more sane way to have fun than many experienced.  As I watched from the deck at the younger generation of our party members running around on the cold ground at midnight and lighting up the skies with their fireworks and a couple members of the older generation shooting off their guns at nothing in particular in tune to the raised volume of Old Ange Syne, I said to myself, "I think I'll stay home next year and watch TV."
