This is not a reflection on your poem, but have you ever noticed how poetry doesn't translate across languages. The point of a poem, I guess, is the sound rather than the meaning, so changing the form of the word often kills the piece.
As a history student I see lots of poems translated for evidence, and sometimes they sound a bit odd. Your poem worked okay...
