I don't watch American Idol.  And, I've never forgiven them for creating Kelly Clarkson.  LOL

I have watched it less than a handful of times. Listening to everyone rave about it is hard to get away from

Would that be considered judging a book by its cover?

Video killed the radio star, Timmytales, MTV made Madonna now you can't
have a "face made for radio" as they say and make it. But I have to say I never watch American Idol, shows like that just depress me.

TIMMYTALES, You are right.  All of my favorites had rather unique charicteristics and attributes.   But, they were/are my favorites because I loved not only their great music, but the whole package.

TIMMY!!!!!!!!
Jim Gaffigan in one of his comedy routines made the point that, if we see a non-pretty person in a music video, they must be super talented.   It goes further than the American Idol though, just think if we see a good-looking person smile at us.  The first thought is usually, "Oh, they're nice."  But, if an ugly person smiles at us, the typical response is "what do THEY want?"  Ever since the Buggles video "Video Killed the Radio Star" inagurated MTV the authority on cultural icons the era of musical greats being able to linger in Pop Culture was put to sea.  Rarely nowadays does real talent translate accordingly to pop success.  But then again, imagine what Brittney Spears would be doing for a living if it weren't for the superficial nature of the music business today.  It would take forever to get the Happy Meal at the drive-thru.

I'm afraid you're right.

Mama Cass would definitely NOT have gotten thru.

btw, I had a chance to go out with one of the original "LImelighters". He lives in Ft. Worth. He seemed like a nice man...in his 50's I think.

I hadn't spoken to him for 5 minutes when he tells me he needs to see my tits cuz he's a boob man and our relationship cannot go further if I have small ones. Can you believe that?

That very thought has crossed my mind any number of times when I watch Idol.  But... maybe it's not a platform for the "greats"  but rather a spring board for those who might never make it passed the front door of a recording company.

Ann Wilson yes
She has one hell of a voice!  The others not overly likely.   But then again look at some who have made it through Idol and others who should have.  America votes but sometimes they do so with their libido versus their hearing.

haha, and don't forget mick jagger with those lips...
AI is all about "the look" and if you have that, then they'll see if you have "the talent."

TIMMYTALES
American Idol is a "talent" contest designed strictly to garner high TV ratings, which it does like no other show of the genre. If the winners go on to successfully sell records, it's just icing on the cake.

You are sooooooooooooooooo right!
Talent should prevail.  Too often it doesn't!  Imagine the rolling stones.  They have got to be theugliest band in rock; and, can Mick really sing?  Neither can Neil Young.  But, we sure would have missed them.
