Being a doctor, he already possessed the knowledge of having had a good love, and taking care of oneself isn't something beyond the reach of a man.
Maybe like me, he lives with her spirit surrounding him my friend.

Friends from church had an exchange student from India living with them for a few months, a teenage boy. He seemed to expect things done for him, until one day the lady of the house, who works full time as a nurse, got angry at him. When he left, he thanked her for teaching him to be more independent. I think the doctor had children and birds to nurture and didn't need anyone else.

I think either reason is good enough. I guess if you want something bad enough, you'll do whatever it takes.
Who knows, maybe his relationship was horrible, and he didn't want to risk experiencing something like that again. Or maybe even he was deeply in love with her and couldn't bring himself to be with anyone else. There are all types of reasons why people do the things they do.
MOST men here aren't that dependent. Not for those reasons, anyway. There are a few that are. Their dependency level varies. Some are totally independent, and others are dependent on a few things.
But usually if they are dependent for anything, and they lose their wife, for whatever reason, they learn REAL QUICK to do the things that they can't live without.
