Nanaroo,
thanks for visiting:) One old wives' tale is that you put butter on their paws when you get to your new home. I suppose by the time they've licked it off, they're settled in their new surroundings.

I really don't know.
Either way as long as you get him there!

Nanaroo, I'd definitely bring the cat to the new house first, maybe with
some small item or clothing that will help keep him mellow.

.. as long as something smells familiar to him..

Nana,
I 'moved' one once in my car for about 1100 miles. She was a stray who had adopted me while I was out of town for a few weeks. She settled down nicely in her little cage for the entire 2-day trip, with the occasional 'pit stop'...

Oh, gulp! I think it will be lots of 'rescue remedy' for all of us (that is a homeopathic remedy that really works with cats).

my cat cried for three days straight.. and that was with the old furniture.
I only moved 3 miles, but it may as well been across country for how much he liked it. LOL I would do the same as Ariala and wait until all the furniture is in place before the move.... but either way, expect a long week and not much sleep.
The good news is that he'll get used to it soon enough!

The last time I moved my cat ( during hurricane ) she ended up with a substance abuse problem. Wonder why cats don't like to ride around like dogs? Good luck and don't be working too hard on the move!!

I had to move my cat last February.
She didn't do well, she cried like a baby for days and so did we. Good luck! Cats don't like change at all.

Ours was only a 5 minute move back in '92, so it wasn't bad, but I waited
until ALL the furniture was in place before moving my cats so they would have the scent and familiarity of the "stuff" to make them feel more at home. Oreo followed me for two days meowing. Hobbes found a closet and hid it in for two days. Sweet Pea never experienced a move. He came later.
