I've teleprompted several presidents and let me tell you they all have speech writers.   Clinton at least did his own rewrites and adlibbed like mad once out there.  Even so, he still had writers.  I bet Chavez does too... bad ones.

hell -fire, aka gehenna

only the King James  (and subsequent translations) calls it Hell Fire, yes it was a valley -- trash was thrown there (the city dump) and fires burned (per Yeshua), whether set or as the result of spontaneous combustion, and they weren't put out.

medieval religion wanted a Hell like Dante described, and contemporary medieval religionists do too, a place to place people undesirable to them (look for me there) so that they can feel "special".

Satan, on the other hand, is who you want him/her to be.

gomey at least

chavez write his own speeches (I think)

someone else puts words into Bush's mouth.  He's not that smart.

Yep, anyone who doesn't believe like we do is the devil

It is sort of convenient to think of Bush as Satan when he says and does
...so many stupid things.  But that's just when I'm disagreeing with him.  I have to admit he did a hell of a job right after 9-11.  He seemed more savior than devil then.  Its all in perception and in your own personal belief system.

Gome, the speech only solidifies for many people that...

you can say anything you want in America.  We protect your right to call our president the devil.  In other countries, you would be killed.

And I'm as surprised as you that educated people accept myth as fact but only their own myths.  Everyone else's myths are cute but couldn't possible be true.  Most stories of creation are far more interesting than the Christian version.  God created the earth, the end.  Boring.

If I had to pick a myth to believe in, I would pick one with great heroism and courage where the creation came out of some struggle.  Far more interesting.

TV, that could have been it. Texas chili residue.

SuccessWarrior -- can you believe that a head of state finally given a

world stage, would make such a fool of himself?

The average kid in high school could have written something better than the drivel Hugo Chavez embarrassed himself with......as for whether or not Satan exists: he certainly does in people's minds.  I find it scary that we have young people graduating from college in the 21st century who actually believe Satan to be a real corporeal being instead of a concept. How is this possible, how can someone for example; get through college level calculus, yet still fully believe an ancient mythical construct of an invisible bad guy? It really does demonstrate the "dampening" effect that religious belief can have on human intellect.

Personally...
... I just think Bush had some bad gas and that's all Chavez was smelling.

It comes as no surprise that it's all a mistranslation, yet again.

This quote sums up why it continues:

"Such evil could come only from the minds of men, and from a desire to frighten others into following corrupt and empty religious teachings."

Here's a link in case you're curious
Hell.  It tells of several origins of Hell and also describes the story my brother told under the "Gehenna" section.

Sunny, we would still have fun but we wouldn't have anyone to blame it on

Of course Satan exists! If he didn't, we wouldn't have ANY fun, now would we? LOL

Thank you very much TV.
Now the other part of the question.  What kind of person still believes there is a mythical place of fire and brimstone where "bad" people go?

Hell
You asked who came up with these ideas... well, I don't have time right now to research this so I'm going by hearsay and my memory of that hearsay.  My brother, who is a pastor, came back from a Holy Land trip and talked of what he had been told was the origin of the description of Hell.  Supposedly outside the city of Jerusalem was an area for trash that smoldered constantly.  The stench was overpowering.  Everyone in the area was familiar with the burning and stench and it was a powerful image to describe a miserable place.  Thus Hell was born.
