Elvis was a consummate showman who knew how to work his crowd.  His appeal was a little different for guys.  We all wanted to imitate his style and look.  Many tried with varying degrees of success, like Rick Nelson.  Many are still trying.  Look at all the Elvis imitators.

Thanks for stopping by, Pat.  Glad to make your acquaintance.

Elvis looked at the camera
and I looked at the movie screen or the TV and it seemed he was looking only at me. He was singing just to me for a split second or two before the camera pulled back and he was playing to the crowd again. It was this charismatic trick that held so many of us in thrall.

Pretty damned good for a non-Elvis fan

You seem to have captured some of the overall effect of the phenomenon that was, and still is, Elvis.

Thanks for sharing.

Here's a non-Elvis-fan's take...
When Elvis exploded onto the scene, he was able to capture the imagination of the whole of America's youth.  Little girls fell in love with the idea of one day falling in love with Elvis.  Little boys dreamed of being the infallable young man on the stage who was rebellious and adored at the same time.  Teenagers dreams turned to, what seemed like, attainable goals of stardom and endless possibilities.  Then came the deal closer for kingship:  nostalgia.  Elvis was the solo pop star that time immortalized.  As these teenagers, dreamers and imaginary lovers grew up, the memories of Elvis became intertwined with the feelings of youth and innocent rebellion that we tend to long for as time moves us into a colder, "realer" world.
