by "here"--do you mean Blogit? If so, I missed whatever happened, but you are right, *most* are kind to one another. It is often the ones who aren't that stick out in our minds, more so than the ones who are.

Where should faith go?
Faith is in God and letting Him take care of the people who do wrong whether it's to an animal or another human.  There are ways to stop the pain inside by not watching those shows.  Humans or animals get hurt all the time, it's what can we do to help them that matters.  Faith in the human race is not gone.  Faith is very strong in the ones that choose to do right.

Julia, my feeling is that when a person commits animal cruelty, the full
force of the law should come down upon them. Not only do I abhor it for the abuse of power over the defenceless, but they are rehearsing the kind of cruelty they will one day inflict upon a human they see as less than themselves.

Call me a coward, but I try not to watch.
Seeing animals suffer does me in.

that outpouring of love is a wonderful counterbalance to the disgust and hatred. I'm working on it, too--but as you know, it's not easy.

Julia

It is truly sad to witness the suffering of living things. I saw really horrible things on my job years ago that really disgusted me and sickened my heart. I did not realize that by reacting to it this way, a prejudice was building inside of me. I hated mankind for a couple of years.

Now, I try to show the animals and children in my life as much love as I can. That's the only way I can justify witnessing it.

I stopped watching that show ages ago!
I, too, couldn't handle the pain I felt whenever I'd see what people do to their pets.  It broke my heart.  I had to stop watching.

Julia, no, closing your eyes to the atrocities doesn't make them go away
Don't let it overwhelm you, though.   I am determined to take steps to advocate in whatever way I can, yours is probably for animals, since you have a tender heart towards them, as defenseless as they are.  The world needs advoctes for those who can't speak for themselves.

They do that because something might be amiss in the brain. Lol.

tell me about it!

I can't believe the things people do to other forms of life, animal or other wise. It makes sense though; if people think it's okay to harm each other for no reason, then harming other animals ,because these people are too lazy to care for them, they have to moral center or just plain think that animals are expendable, is a given.

It breaks my heart to think of the suffering these animals go through because they have no way of stopping it themselves, they have no voice or intellingence that is similar to ours. I get so angry and frustrated when I watch shows like that. I can't understand it and hope that those people that harm those animals get their karma.

I agree with you, but closing your eyes doesn't make the atrocities go away. I meant to tell you before re: your comment that MONK is an hour long sitcom and a half hour would do--it is so, sooooooo much more than a sitcom!! In fact, I don't even know how to classify it!

geez... stop watching it! I can't stand shows like that...
I used to watch a lot more drama, but the past few years, I stopped.  I think life is serious enough.... I want my entertainment to either make me laugh or think, but not cry.  Stick with Monk and the lighter side of life!

I, too, become quite upset when I see a news story or a segment of a magazine style show that reveals the blatant ignorance and cruelty to animals.  Some of the stories are nothing less than horrific and yes, they are crimes no less punishable than if someone had robbed the local grocery store (at least when no one is hurt).  I always ask myself why someone bothered to acquire a pet in the first place.   And the more raging question – What kind of person commits such ruthless acts?

posted by Troosha on September 13, 2006 at 2:24 PM | link to this | reply

You are certainly not the only one!
For many reasons my husband and I often say to each other that we despair of what is going on in the world, ie. typicaly human's cruelty to each other and to animals. I know it can sound like being self- rightous but when you can't dream of doing such things yourself as you say it is unbelievable. We have programmes like that in UK but the one I'm thinking of is about how the RSPCA rescue animals in distress, so it has a lot of happy bits where animals are looked after. But even so, many times there are animals which have been badly mistreated. Then although it is good to see they were found and helped, you are always left thinking how many there are out there suffering and not getting help. It's at that point I start to wish I hadn't watched it!

I agree, I think they should have to experience the same thing...I would have liked to lock that woman up in a cell and give her no food or water for months. Would she think her captors were "doing nothing wrong"--I doubt it.

I know,Julia, I wish sometimes we could all go back into Ozzy and
Harriet land, back to "Father Knows Best" tv, but I somehow don't think that living in denial is the answer either.  Maybe you could join a pet rescue organization or form one?

I've always wanted to put the owners in the animal's place.
You know, let them drink filthy water, use the bathroom in their bedding, all that good stuff, and see how they like it. Poepl are just friggin' clueless. And people who fight animals need to be castrated with old library scissors and sent for a swim through the nearest alligator pond.

We had a pretty nasty one here:a guy died and his starving dogs, who obviously had not eaten in awhile, maybe before the guy died -- ate him to stay alive. They finally found them yesterday.

It is pathetic.

I guess I am the REAL idiot here because I continue to watch even though I know how awful it will make me feel. They do try to balance the good "happy outcomes" with the bad, but the bad always overshadows. I know there are millions of wonderful pet "guardians" and for them, I am eternally grateful.

Sometimes I imagine there is a secret place, like Atlantis, where we might find refuge from such as this.

Julia,
One of the downsides of tv and the internet is seeing so much of the cruelty and ignorance. Were we just more ignorant before those?  I wouldn't say ignorance is bliss, but there are millions of pet owners who DON'T abusse their animals that don't make the news.  It's heartwrenching to see it, though.
