Julia,
are you aware of the fact that extreme caution not to catch germs is actually wrong? You better get some germs, so you become imune to them. As kids we used to play in dirty brooks, got our hands cut open on rusty nails, etc, etc - and never became ill. Even washing your hands too much is not really healthy.

Sly
I thought his obsession with having things in certain common quantities, and the need for x number of brown suits, is considered OCD. He also has the stepping on cracks/lines thing. Also, he has stopped what he is doing to line things up all the time. He can't concetrate until this is done. I know OCD people and they describe some of their actions in these terms.

That is a great show!
Tony Shaloub has been a favorite ever since he was Antonio Scarpaci on
"Wings."
I think my favorite scene in Monk was one where he was trapped in Wal Mart, being chased by vicious dogs, treed on top of a shelf with the dogs snarling under him, and about to go nuts because just across the aisle, just out of reach, several laundry detergent boxes are askew on the shelf.

I guess he has a phobia about germs which is a common sort of OCD
but I've seen the show more than once and he still doesn't convince me.

The problem with the show is that Monk doesn't have OCD. He has
a million symptoms, but no obsession. I know about OCD. I have had it all my life. I like Tony Shaloub all right but his character does not have OCD.

Julia,
Your line: one can't help but think about all of the *(bacterial)* places one touches in a single day, made me burst out laughing. Very well written,

Julia,
I watched one of those talkshows and they talked about all that stuff, the fecal matter on car handles, ATM Machines, the bottom of ladies' handbags. They also spoke about the remote harbouring all sorts of germs, imagine our keyboards and mouse? And yes, they talked extensively about shopping cart handles. I just about grossed the office out talking about that stuff, so yeah, Monk and you have a right! Glad to hear he won. I never miss an episode. Love him to death!

Julia, I've never seen the show but I sure have the feel for what you are saying. Grocery carts and theater seat arm rests have been proven to be among the worst. I can't even go to theaters anymore and keep my mind on the movie wondering what I'm sitting in. I carry those sani-wipes in the car to clean the steering wheel often. There was a time, years back when I had the habbit of sticking my pen in my mouth while I used my hands for something. I broke that habbit years ago. But, I found out the hard way that just about the worst thing is rubbing your eyes. Germs on your hands go right into your system especially if you are one of those people you see picking little cronjules out of the corner of the eyes.

UK radio was talking about this yesterday. The steering wheel of your car
contains almost as much bacteria as your toilet.
Not just your car, Julia, everyone's car.

I forgot he was in Wings
But, yuk, my son just reminded me that Leland was Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. I'm trying not to think of it when I look at him.
The germ thing...I remember in when I was in high school reading a study about those little mints they give out in restaurants...not the ones at the table...the ones that were in a bowl right at the front door. Someone tested them and found that they were laced with urine. People ate, paid the bill, went to the bathroom, came out without washing their hands and grabbed the mints. I NEVER got over that one. Not eating those mints.
I love Julie in that show. She really is a great adult character to Monk's childlike character.
Have you ever gone on the Web site and taken the quiz for "Are you Monkish?" I thought I'd kill on that trivia stuff but I'm pitiful.

I do not mind
germs. I believe they build up your natural resistance, but my wife has a phobia and she has gotten me into a routine of washing my hands far more often than I used to. Monk is great by the way.

kitty cat--
it is often so hilarious that I nearly choke from laughing so hard, and yet, there are plenty of times that it also has wonderful drama, heartfelt moments and just good entertainment. Truly, it's got it all. Some episodes are better than others, as is the case with all shows, but I've yet to be disappointed.

I remember that actor from the show, Wings. He was sort of dorky, but
I can see how it would be a funny concept. I'm willing to give it a shot. LOL I really don't know anyone that watches it... unless they're keeping it quiet!

kitty cat--LOLOL. Sorry,
I am a Monk pusher. As for why he's called Monk, it's just his character's name (Adrian Monk). I don't think there is a particular reason why the writer went with that, or if there is, I haven't read about it. But he is kinda Monkish in that he's quite the loner.

It took me a while to warm to Monk
including wondering why he was called Monk - doesn't matter, as soon as you actually watch an entire episode you find out its his name! and then you're hooked! I hadn't realised though that the actor had won emmies for his performances!

Last time they had a "Monkathon" I recorded 5 hours of it so Icould see the show when I felt like it...he IS an amazing actor.
I didn't know about the shopping cart handles but always suspected. Some of the upper class stores around here have handy wipes beside the shopping carts.
