My mom's dog reacted similarly
to meeting my son for the first time. She has a little Maltese who had never seen children before my son. We've a few trial-and-error experiences! I hope your kitties recover smoothly. I'm sure they will over time...

I think it's fairly common feline behavior to be freaked in new surroundings; they are starting to venture out a bit more each day.

hi julia. if your mother is going to offer sausage drippings, those cats
will be out of the closet in no time!
when my parents moved from saint john to quebec, my mother and i travelled together in the family car, dad was on a business trip. at one point of the drive, mom and i caught up to the moving van on the highway and as we neared, the van started drifting in and out of the oncoming traffic lane so we assumed the driver was falling asleep. we wanted to pass him, we wanted to wake him, we didn't want to get run over by him as we went by, it was all very unnerving, watching all our worldly possessions careening about. thankfully, everyone and everything arrived in one piece.
do let me know over time how you find being back in your old home town. i don't want to go back to my town, per se, but i do yearn to move back to maine, which basically is a small town! i worry that the s l o w will be my undoing, now that i'm accustomed to city life.

"Needs must when the devil drives" Julia, it's better than some places I've
been. It's private and quiet. The cats we'll worry about later, which reminds me of another favorite song, "Our House".

When we first moved here to the city a few months ago...
My cat was the same way. She's 4 yrs old but had only met a handful of people her whole life. She had never seen a child before. She was freaked out for a few weeks. Eventually, she came around though, as I'm sure yours will as well.

I can't believe it either, Julia, I believe animals need space and freedom
as much as people do. I grew up rambling through pastures and over acres of space, and I would feel cruel keeping an animal from having any freedom merely for my own enjoyment.

many people keep indoor kitties and swear they are happy, but I am inclined to believe that most of them are not. I've seen the pure joy of my three cats romping in a 4-acre field, catching gophers, climbing the trees, lounging in the sun and lots more, and I can't believe that apartment dwelling would ever come close.

I had several good reasons for coming back here, but of course that's still no guarantee that I will find it palatable. But then, we never really know for sure unless we try, right?

LOL, Julia., I believe you! I really want to get a kitty as soon as we
have a "cat friendly" home. I'd really hate to have one confined to an urban apartment, without outside access.

Julia...When you choose to move back to a place where you've lived before, there's usually a good reason. You liked it there. I'm back now to a great, yet small place after raising a family and working in cities. Come to find out - so have many others here.

I understand the temptation, Julia., it might get a little crowded in there
but I know the feeling. One of my favorite songs is still "All I want is a room somewhere" from My Fair Lady. That, and the story, by Virginia Woolf, "A Room of One's Own"

Julia., that seems wise of the cats, to find a safe haven, until they feel
comfortable in their new surroundings. It's always good to have that to retreat to, when overwhelmed by threatening and overwhelming stimuli, for all beings.
