Mademoiselle
Mademoiselle - perhaps in some cases.  Why did I want to type "most" cases?  If you're a woman who is responsible for 100% of the housework, childcare, & bill paying I can see how marriage would be a prisons.  I also see marriage as a benefit.  I won't bore you with the details but to me my marriage-most times is a benefit.

It's never that easy
to just walk.  And while mademoiselle has a valid point, it's not always like that and I see couples who are very close, so I know it can be done.  Give and take is important; knowing you can count on someone is important too. I'd say the biggest thing is respect, because without that you don't have a lot else.

I can see why marriage is referred to as an "institution" ...

Because it's a prison concocted by men to prevent women from realizing their full personal, financial and sexual potential.

"The discreet charm of the bourgeois."
