I guess, with me, it's a combination. FYI......brownie batter ice cream with brownie chunks should be outlawed!! It's that good!!

Food4thought, Dreyer's Ice Cream Sandwich ice cream is my current
favorite. I think some arguments are about as silly as arguing over whose favorite ice cream is better. It's a matter of taste, and matters of taste are not subject to debate because they're personal and idiosyncratic.
Matters of values are still subjective, but, I believe open to discussion and argument, in the classical sense of the word "argument", ie, proposing a reasoned thesis and supporting arguments. When people take them personally and start name-calling then it degenrates into the absurd.
I like your distinction between Opinon and News & Politics, that seems logical to me. As for basing my opinions on which way the wind is blowing on the blog, pffffft. I'm a big girl, and to misquote Bob Dylan, "I'm a clean-cut kid, and I been to college, too", I learned a few things there.
