I think it is wrong to do so, but I admit, if I ever caught someone hurting my child, it would be the last time they hurt anyone, if I could help it.

It seems to be one thing everyone agrees on...
Something should definitely be done about sexual predators!

A rose by any other name --

I think there are two kinds of pedophiles: the first will seduce a child, touch inappropriately, molest, sexualize and even force them.  In extreme cases, there will be abduction, even murder. Some (maybe most) everyday predators have been preyed upon by trusted adults in their circle of family or friends.

The less obvious pedophile, is the "virtuous" ones who read every news story, watch TV reports with rapt attention and repeat the gory details over and over. They'll use the "ain't it awful" tone of voice, speak in shocked whispers, but seem to be always focused on sex crimes, especially pedophilia.

So it's not just the scary uncle or the out-of-control school teacher who misuses the helpless child or betrays the innocent's trust -- it's the media, and closed-minded puritannical adults who make normal sexual expression a thing of shame and repression.

Nautikos...In my post, castration was mentioned several times.
My remedy would be execution though, as I believe these monsters would simply find some other way to harm children.

Ariel,

I think the answer to your question is found in your own piece. We call child molesters 'paedophiles' for the same reason we call homosexuals 'gays', convicts 'inmates', Mexican invaders 'immigrants', and on and on...

As far as a solution for the problem itself is concerned, I'm afraid that my main proposal would offend our society's fine liberal sensitivities, though I suggest it would be reasonably effective. Castration.

I agree with A & B-

Our attitudes have softened toward the crime and the ciminal because it has been so prevalent.  We barely look up from the set when a newsman tells of some little boy abducted and raped...the body later found in a creek.

We've heard that story so many times, it doesn't affect us anymore.

I did like what you said here:
"...that child sexual abuse was as much, or more prevalent in former eras. Possibly they are correct; but we live in the here and now, and it is our duty to ensure as far as possible our children’s safety. The responsibility is ours alone, and only by taking every opportunity to make our voices heard can we ever hope for change."

Wake up people! We could make a difference if we would!

This is a subject there is no room for softening on. If a person is arrested and convicted by someone who is just setting them up then when that fact comes our that persona is as guilty as the one doing the crime. But to hurt a little child is beyond anything I could tolorate. On the spot I would commit a crime I would shoot them without a trial if I saw them in the process.

I think the attitudes towards offenders have softened just as crime is increasing.
