Janes,
I am so glad your sister is having a good experience with homeschooling.  Thanks for the website.

My sis is educating her six kids at home.

They are getting a fantastic classical education, studying everything from Latin to history to advanced math, English, etc.  The kids are involved in swimming and tennis classes; the older kids are taking piano lessons along with a second instrument.

My nephew hopes to attend the Naval Academy and yes, they DO accept home schoolers.  About 4/year out of what, more than a thousand?

For those who are interested in home schooling, but concerned about legal issues and potential harrassment from the public school system (which happens all too frequently), a good resource and protection is the Homeschool Legal Defense Assoc.  I think their website is www.hslda.org

Hi white-cossack,

I completely agree.  The decision of whether to homeschool your children or not has alot to do with $$$$$$.  Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against our public education system, having been educated that way myself.  However, it has definitely changed since the days I was a student and I'm just not sure all of those changes have been for the better.

I am so glad to hear that your girls had a positive experience with homeschooling.  One of my best friends was homeschooled and went on to Cedarville College where she earned a BA in Education.  She is now working as an Instructional Assistant in a classroom for Emotionally Disturbed children in a public school.

its all about the $$$$$$

My wife and I home schooled out three daughters after arriving on Guam and seeing how absolutely horrid the public school system was. That was in 1987 and we left in 90. Hopefully their school system has improved.

Upon returning to Alaska my daughters all elected to enter the public school system. Each of them returned to homeschooling within a year. On the SAT's and other mandatory state testing they all were in the top 5% in academics straight across the board.

The problems with homeschooling - some schools will not allow your students to join in the extra-curricular activities, sports, track, field trips, dance, music. I was able to work out a deal with our local public school system to allow my girls to participate in some activities. There are liability issues, and each school system in Alaska gets paid by "the student" for budgeting purposes.

DRAWBACKS to Homeschooling - Several Military Branches and Academy's will not accept your graduate with a GED, most colleges REQUIRE "remedial" classes because of a GED  (Please note I said "most" and not "all"), Some Federal, State and Local governmental jobs/services will not accept a GED.

If I had to do it over again, I would without hesitation.

mandalee - would there not be enough homeschoolers to make their own
sports program?  seems to me there are a lot of homeschoolers out there, certainly there are a lot in vancouver.

Sunnybeach7,
I couldn't agree with you more. Like you,  I wish school districts could come up with a fair solution.  Thanks for visiting and sharing your thoughts!  It is always a treat for me to see a new reader interested in what I write.

Yes, I think it's unfair
I homeschool, and in our school district homeschooling is not favored, and kids are not allowed to participate in the schools extra-curricular activities.

However, there are other school districts in the area that allow homeschoolers in their district to participate.
