Thank you so much. It is nice; however, it makes me more sensitive to the barbs about our country. My folks came when it was all forest. They have worked hard, given a lot for it to be the country it is. Now so many are trampling the work of those before them for no reason. Many lost their lives for freedom, clearing the land, preping a land for greatness such as it is.

How amazing to have such a tangible history. I'm envious as my tree is a
lot harder to climb, especially on the new immigrant side.  What a wonderful legacy for the younger ones.

Justi, my sister carries on that tradition. I just can't go back to the
cemetery...I see it as a place of death, and my mother is not there. I carry her in my heart...I visit with her every day.

Lots of those things faded with the generation before us.

Justi, I haven't heard that term "Decoration Day" since everyone of the generation of family members older than me has passed on but I have lots of memories about it.

I didn't know that. Thank you for letting me know. It is interesting how alike and how different us humans are in our traditions.

It is a sad story. Life was much harder then I am sure. It is good to have siblings. I never had any and I always was jealous of those who did. These parents must have been totally devastated. I think of them when I get to feeling sorry for myself about my boys.

How sad about the eight children. It kind of struck me because I am the baby of 8.

Of course we will all be and are buried far apart.

I did that decoration service for Joycie last week, she would have been 71 today.

Catholics do that on All Souls Day in November. This was a very touching post. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for reading. Those are really precious times we don't know that so much until we are older.

Hi, Justi,
My family has been doing this for years.  Usually on Mother's Day and/or Father's Day, weather permitting, my whole family gathers and makes rounds at two cemetaries and cleans the graves and places flowers and then usually has a picnic lunch nearby.  I've missed the last few years because of work, and my grandma is getting on in years, but it's still quite a tradition.  I don't think I've ever heard it given a name, just something we do.  Maybe it is a southern thing.  I'm surprised you haven't received more comments on this one.  Thanks.
