Dylan,

I was very touched by your comment about your experience as his assistant giving you a lesson in human dignity.  The world needs more people with your compassion and heart for others.

Since joining Blogit, I have been blessed to make your acquaintance.

I agree

(and something tells me we've talked about this issue before?)

For the past couple of days I have been (and for the immediate future I will be) working with a kindergartener in a wheelchair by being his personal assistant at school. He needs constant supervision and aid -- help with school work, lifting him into and out of his wheelchair, etc. I can definitely say, far from this making him seem less of a person, this experience gave me a lesson in human dignity.

I don't know how much this kid has developed an understanding of dignity (he seems pretty unembarrassed about the whole thing) but I have to remind myself frequently to let him do as much for himself as he can, in order to respect him as a person and not merely a subject of professional intervention. In any event, this kind of problem is the kind that recommends whatever medical treatment might help (he is able to move his legs somewhat) so if there were a surgery that could render him more independent, that would probably be a good thing. But this cosmetic surgery (and that's definitely the right word, cosmetic) described by you about the Oprah show really provokes my sympathy for these misguided people who believe that frequent plastic surgery is going to make them better.

TAPS,
I can't either.  I agree with you, some do need it to look normal.  Those who abuse it to look like Barbie must have other issues going on as well.

Plastic surgery is a wonderful thing when it is needed.   Being one of those who needed it three times in order to look half-way normal, I cannot even imagine someone electing to have it done in order to look like Barbie.

Burly,
You are so right.  I wish more people realized that.

Absolutely!

Yea, plastic surgery just makes you look worse.

Obviously, you're exactly right. Altering your physical look for cosmetic purposes is just a manifestation of inner doubt about your worth. If you don't like yourself, no one else will either!
