Corbin,

I'm thinking the rape investigation was done by "48 Hours". Heck, don't remember which show, but it was one of those on CBS. Shadow

CorbinDallas,
Yikes! One of those went missing in Seattle. That's a little too close to home.   These are dark and dangerous times we live in. Although, I'm not sure that traveling through medieval England on horseback or through the Mediterranearn at any point was without its hazards, but 13 people on what are supposedly innocuous fun vacations on an internationally known cruise ship. I like how the bloody handprints were cleaned up before the investigation!

OFFBEATS

I still can't help thinking what a great movie this would make......

The killer is the young manager of the internet cafe on the ship....since he works for a company that sub-leases the space from the cruise lines.....he can move freely from ship to ship (they get rotated around to give them a chance to see the world)  killing and moving on to the next venue......."The Cyber Cafe Killer"...LOL

I know the numbers compared to the total number of people cruising makes this a small percentage.....but, if they were disappearing or dying while ashore, it would be a little more in perspective.

But this is occurring in a very closed environment.......with little, if any, outside influences or access.

Giskard

I don't know if anyone is advocating a Sea Police.......but the cavalier attitude of the cruise lines is a bit callous.....

In a sense you are placing yourself and your family in the care of the cruise ships, they need to be responsible for the safety of the passengers from crew or one another, just as much as from the elements their ships pass through.

It occurs to me...
after re-reading my previous post I need to make a correction If we assume that the average cruise lasts about a week then that works out to a little less than 200,000 people on cruises at any particular moment in time. That's the number we need to contrast the 13 missing people in two years against (rather than the 20 million).

How does that compare to a comparable city of that size? A quick glance at some statistics shows Mobile Al to be about that size. It's murder rate is 9.0/100,000 which would work out to about 36 murders in two years.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly people are always willing to cry for more government. Even if we have to invent a problem for it to solve!

Personally, I find the idea of international waters being a government free zone kind of enticing.

Sounds like a plot for CSI. Seriously, looks like "at this point in time", you can get away with murder on a CRUISE ship. Soon the cruise lines will have to hire more security to patrol the railings, and/or cameras everywhere. HOw then can the appeal of "what happens on a cruise ship stays on a cruise ship" continue. The disappearance count IS pretty startling.

CORBINDALLAS
I think your right about getting away with murder on the high seas. I have been on a few cruises and for the life of me, I can't imagine anyone falling over the deck. Maybe someone who is ready to commit sucicide? Either way, there has to be a change in the laws and regulations, not just on the cruise ships, but in maritime law. International water maritime law needs to be revisited....Good post as usual my friend!

It is time someone began to bring this out. I saw something someone in the mid eighties did on this--the rape thing--yet it was soon swept under the rug. The pocketbook is the best place to kick these sorts of people.

This is totally outrageous. People hopefully can sue the liners for the damages regardless of where the people disappeared, were raped or killed. A boycott is good medicine for the money making 'anything goes monsters'.

Good post, I have so missed your writing.

Hi.. I've seen reports on this and actually stopped saving for a cruise in Alaska, I couldn't find anyone who really wanted to go with me and I decided against going alone. I beleive the laws should become stricter and allow the countries where the missing people originate to be fully involved.

Corbin_Dallas,

Murders is not the only thing being reported. A news crew went undercover to investigate the continuous sexual harassment and rapes being committed on cruise ships by the ship's employees. There were interviews with women who had been drugged, then raped by different members of the crew. Nothing much was done about it because again the ships were in international waters. There was also that report about the cruise ship being attacked by pirates, but got away. I saw this "man overboard" on the news myself. I'm beginning to think the Blogit cruise we talked about taking next summer stay on land. Shadow

Is there really a problem?
Are there any statistics available on this? Certainly there must be more than just 13 missing persons from cruise ships in the last two years. According to one webpage I found there were about five million cruise line passengers in North America in just the first six months of this year alone.

Out of that many people over 2 years, which would come close to 20 million people, if only 13 were missing, I'd have to wonder why so few.

Am I missing something here? (no pun intended!)

I saw this and thought it was very strange and first I thought
there are times when people want to "disappear but this is sort of crazy. I have heard about certain crimes on these ships and would not be surprised if the crew were involved in rapes, robberies especially of the elderly and murder, and what an easy way to dispose of the body at sea.

Corbin...
a lot of the people who work on these cruise lines are from other countries and are often unable to be found after such an incident. Rape is the number one crime on these ships then robbery and disappearances/murders. They know they can do whatever they want on these cruises and get away with it. Hence all the crime. Personally, I wouldn't take a cruise even if it were free!

I hope so...unless it's a Filipino serial killer!

The thing that really bothers me is the jurisdiction problem.  The cruise lines are in charge of any investigation and reporting to the FBI.....how do we know the information is accurate? After all,  bad news like this would certainly hit them in the pocket book
