- Go to THE SPANISH INQUISITION. PART NINE
Tapsel
Your are right to express horror and incredulity at the sheer numbers of victims of the Spanish Inquisition, and its long duration. Unfortunately, many records of trials and punishments were destroyed, either by French soldiers, during the Peninsula War, or by rampaging Spanish.
No full records seem to exist -- or as is perhaps more likely -- do exist, but are not available for study by historians, and the figures that I quote are undoubtedly on the low side.
One can dismiss out of hand the claim by some ( mainly American ) historians that the Spanish Inquisition alone killed 1,000,000 people, but the numbers of victims were without a doubt far higher than those quoted in my last post.
One doubts if the Spanish or Vatican archives will ever be opened for study, for, as I point out in the last part ( which I shall post this evening ), even today the Catholic Church is not given to expressing any remorse or contrition for the barbarities that were committed in its name throughout history.

Thank you for your comment, which I've just seen ( it's 12 noon here ).
My main purpose in posting these pieces about the Spanish Inquisition is to show how readily religion can be perverted, and used as a mask for strictly secular purposes ; tyranny over, and oppression of others.

Thank you for your interesting comment.
I must say that I've never heard of Napoleon's use of gas to kill people. Quite a startling revelation! However, I would like to see some evidence of this, before believing it.
As far as I'm aware, coal gas was not used in lighting etc until the reign of Napolean 111, and one wonders, if what your author alleges is true, what sort of gas was used.
Francisco Goya did many etchings of French atrocities during the Peninsula War of the 18th/19th centuries, to show how barabrously the French behaved.
I'm posting the last part of the Spanish Inquisition this evening

Your articles are always very instructive. I have learn a lot from them and today, I am going to buy a book on Napoleon. What has that got to do with your text ? you might have asked. What I have discovered in your text or posts are that, all what are taking place today took place in the past as well. In other words we are just copying from the past. Now, the author of the book on Napleon claims that, the French empero was the first use gas in mass killing. Doesn't it sound as though Hitler invented nothing? Good morning.

It always has been and always will be "Great to be the King." Self interest is the God of this world.

Ariel70, The numbers are inconceivable even without the beyond belief suffering of each individual.
