Too few and far between.
In Cassady's case there are a number of factors that prevent her from learning. One factor is that this has happened three times in 8+ years. It also happened in the dark and the skunk was probably headed for our tomatoes and not really in the back yard. So she can't learn about what she can't see. Then the other main factor is that she's so possessive of her personal space. She always goes all out in protecting it. A few feet beyond our property line and her behavior changes radically. She doesn't care for other dogs at all. She is completely oblivious to them. But inside her very real den line and she's fierce. Then there's the critters other than dogs--which she will always chase. Squirrels anywhere on the street. Raccoons in our yard or anywhere. The rabbits at Danehy Park would be doomed if they were a bit slower. And so on. And life teaches us that everyone doesn't need to come out a winner. Only some of us, regardless of species, is enough. But whatever a winner does, they have to be able to continue doing that in the face of adversity. So nature gives us all a good dose of stick-to-it-tiveness.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I am happy there are no skunks in Hawai`i.
