What a trip down Memory Lane. I actually liked my typing class--I was one of
those people who took to it quickly. Like you, I am very appreciative that I took the course.

Whacky46, what I hated even more was shorthand. My mom really pushed me to take that even though I didn't want to and told her I didn't want to be a stenographer. She was right. Even though I complained the whole school year and hated every minute of all the homework practice, I did get a lot of use out of it back in the good old days.

Yes 46...
I too took a class on the old manual Smith Corona's. We had three electrics and we took turns with those. I think I got a D+ on that class and could do a scorching 32 cwpm at my best. My kids first experiece was called keyboarding, which they had to do before they turned them loose with a 'puter. Speaking of which, computers are so far beyone a typewriter, no erase ribbons or white out. There are programs that turn your speech into "typing" now that could be cool, or dangerous.

When I enlisted in the Air Force as a young man, they sent me to typing school. That skill has held me in good stead for many years and I even typed my wife's doctoral dissertation. It's a great skill, especially for the computer age.

I have been pointing out the similarities - aged care and early school art
did know that
"people think at about 500 words a minute, but you can only talk at a maximum of 200"
strange isn't it.
I didn't do typing at school - but - they do still teach it.
Most have programs on the computer.
I don't think it is really valuaed though.
Interesting topic

I had a tyrant as a typing teacher too
and now I can type, without error, and very, very fast. I can't even remember her name, but she changed my life.

I'm glad you remembered how to type, Whacky!! This is so funny!

...brings back memories of those old clunking typewriters.

That's a neat story, Whacky...
I too, took a mandatory typing class in high school. Unlike your teacher, mine was nice enough but she constantly scolded me for not using the right fingers for the right keys and for the longest time I looked at them, too.
So eventually, I had to explain that because my hands are spastic, I can't use certain fingers for certain keys. I also explained that my eyes and my hands don't always work properly together. I failed the class, but at least now I can type without looking at the keys.
Thanks for sharing your story!!

Whacky-this is great memory. Sometimes when we are put through an ordeal our eyes are blinded to the benefits. The bad thing is we value the benefit after the fact.

Whacky,
I took typing my senior year. We used electric typewriters. The teacher left the windows opened throughout the whole six weeks of class. It was in January and February. She said it would keep us more accurate. The only girl who typed above 100 wpm played classical piano. I left the class typing about 75 wpm. I skipped at least once every other week. Shadow
