Xeno-x - we will probably never know the percentage of gays in society
The gay Community themselves would like us to believe that it is as high as 20% ...1 in 5 persons are gay? I know an agenda laden contention when I hear one. By the same token, some members of the religious community would have us believe it is less than 2% to suggest that it is an abhorration that will grow if left unchecked. Another agenda at work. People outside these agendas guestimate at 4-5% ...I use 4% myself but understand when saying so that it is only an illustrative number.

not much chances
the % of gays is an estimate -- who knows how many really?
some people here don's seem to have encountered gays to their knowledge
they have weird ideas about gays
it's like any other segment of society
you only know the truth when you get to know them
are people afraid to know them?

majroj -- right on and no kidding
some of the comments that I have heard around here almost suggest that there is a gay outbreak, like a queer plague or something. 1 in 15-20 people are gay, what are the chances of having spent your life without contact with them?

Someone say "Gays"?
Just a sidebar. A few of the folks I served with in the military were gay; it was a tacitly accepted fact, they were all amongst the best we had. There have to have been others whom I was ignorant about.
As in life, if one thinks those about him he (or she) admires/trusts/depends upon are all like him, then he is living in a fool's paradise. He probably grew up with gay teachers or clergy who only helped, treated by gay medical personnel who only had his recovery in mind; maybe the priest who wed him to his bride was gay; and the undertaker who finally puts him to rest may or may not be gay as well.
Cradle to grave. No time for witchhunting.
Thanks for the good post.

it's more visible
because
1. gays are more visible
2. more people are accepting of them
3. the subject is not being swept under a rug or kept in a closet.
4. Christian Fundamentalists feel the need to speak out against what they perceive as sin.
these among other things.
the subject will stay with us for quite some time because of resistance to growing acceptance.
