Actually, from what I've read . . .
Teaching babies sign language early on better prepares them to learn spoken languages.  They can grasp signed languages quicker and will thus have the necessary background needed to learn spoken languages.  I know I'll teach my own children sign language!

Editormum,

You're right...I think you did a wonderful thing by teaching your child sign language.  Studies have proven that it's difficult for very young children to articulate, and signing is a great way to help them learn how to do that.

Another dispute about the languge is that many people who work with Autistic children now also teach them to sign as well.  Most of them are unable to communicate effectively and this helps them in so many ways.

I started learning sign language when I was six years old.  I don't get much chance to practice, but I still remember most of what I was taught.  My one weakness lies in that because my hands and eyes don't always work together as they should, I'm not always able to translate it very well.

Sadly, American Sign language is not required as a secondary language among hearing children.   It should be.

God bless you for teaching your children this wonderful skill.
