I would trace it back even farther, to the culture of poverty. Perhaps she didn't know any better or have any better role models.

I hear you..

We used to teach that the wages of sin are death...talk about practical demonstration!!!!!! Nice movie precept. One night's "hookup" kills you thirty-four years later!

One New Orleans planner proposes razing the poorer sections and rebuilding there (say what?!) with middle to upper middle class housing; the folks flooded out will return to them, get training, and be able to afford them. (What elitist  and maybe racial bullshit!). Another proposes rebuilding small cheap housing, a new ghetto.

Look at all tourist towns, or countries. Wealth is concentrated, often out of the area, and many locals work seasonally and are without benefits, i.e., "poor".

Very good post and it is interesting what you said, this past Sunday

 George Will was on ABC TV This Week and said

Three Ways to cure poverty;

1-Graduate high school

2-Don’t have a child until you are married.

3-Don’t get married until you’re twenty.
