I don't know whose idea it was, but it certainly isn't what I would consider a rescue that's for sure.

If the cats can't go, then neither do I
My cats are my children.  I would have called their bluff, and if it wasn't a bluff, then so be it.  That's no rescue.  That's cruel, heartless, and before I can go further, I'll just stop there before I get myself too wound up and angry again.

I had not heard about making people choose between medicine and pets, but I did see a man interviewed who had to choose between his luggage and his dogs (maybe the same thing if he had his medicine in his luggage!)  Anyway, he chose his dogs.  I would too.

When I worked on the coast,
we put out a hurricane guide every year. One of the things I did was call around the Carolinas and Georgia to make a listing of shelters and motels that would take pets. We put this out every year in May. And it cannot be stressed enough: PLAN AHEAD!

At this stage of the game, they are stuck in the aftermath, and they either have to accept what help can be given, within its limitations, or do without.

I hate to say it, but there was plenty of time to get out before the storm hit. And if you're too poor to get out of town when an apocalyptic storm of the century is coming, then I'm sorry; you're too poor to own pets.

me and my wife were talking about that today. i think that i would take measures to escape with them way ahead of time. that's how you show them how much you care for them. but, if faced with such a decision, i would rather be with them than abandon them.

...i don't know why, except taht it would have been teh direction of teh individual rescurer....not a pet owner or lover apparently. I saw Rue Mc Clenahan on TV this morning speaking of the importance of pets to their owners and especailly the elderly, and saying no pets needed to be left behind. She gave names of places and shelters set up to help them....but she made a real point of how tehy should all be rescued with their owners not seperated or left behind.

Quirky,
My guess is you know just how with you I am on this. I recently lost my cat, but I still have 3 dogs. Living in a hurricane "zone" my husband and I are well aware of the fact that if someone has to come save us, they aren't taking our "children." And I am not leaving without them. I would, without question, take the bullet over leaving the kids. We know, in a situation like that, we'd have to get out before, or swim out on our own. (don't laugh, but we have an old bass boat that I wanted my husband to get rid of...he says he's keeping it for just this purpose.)

With doggy people and cat people, it probable takes one to know one. A friend of mine has a child, around five, and one day he just blurted out, from nowhere "Pets teach us how to love"!! We didn't know where he got that from, but he was pretty spot on it would seem.

Quirky-girl

that would be a real tuffy alright. Adds another dimension to the meaning of "losing everything". Heartbreaking. I saw where some people were re-united with their pets, some of them were evacuated before hand i think cause they were taken to shelters for safety. Others were being rescued with their pets.

Quirky,

I saw the same thing, but later I saw where they were allowing pets to come with their owners, so I kinda think it has to do with whoever is in charge of that particular area or boat, whichever. Personally, they are gonna have to shoot me and I hope that they also shoot Purr Purr afterwards so I won't have to witness it. Shadow

Katrina Aftermath: Helping Animals Too
The magnitude of the losses from hurricane Katrina are staggering. Many people risked their lives to save their beloved pets, and many more were reluctantly forced to leave their pets behind. The Humane Society of the United States has its own disaster response team that is working where they can to help disaster victims and their animals. They are accepting donations on their website, if you wish to help. Many other organizations will also be helping out with taking in displaced pets and other rescue efforts, such as Noah's Wish, which is dedicated to saving animals after disasters. Please, consider donating to help recovery efforts from Katrina, and consider donations to an agency such as the Red Cross as well as an agency devoted to animals

I read about this yesterday. It's sickening. I saw a couple on the news

that had to choose between their box of medication (the man was recovering from a liver transplant) or their dog.  They were allowed to carry only one thing.  They were tormented by regret at having to leave the dog or else the husband would die.

They also said that they had set up makeshift euthanasia areas for animals, and the big dogs were fighting it... the gas wasn't strong enough for them so they were suffering.  I had to turn off the tv.  I know when I've seen too much.

Your dogs are lucky, there's no reason people can't treat their pets like that if they so choose. Even strays used to fending for themselves in New Orleans won't survive if there is no food or clean drinking water available.

Not that I agree
but some head honcho thinks that pets are instinctivly able to fend for themselves and can survive the harsh elements of this disasster better than a human, so pets have been restricted.  IT is suppose to make sense but for those of us that have pets it doesnt. My two Dalmatians would never survive without us because they dont even know that they are dogs.  They have always been babied and friends and relatives of ours comment that if there is such a thing as reincarnation that they want to come back as one of our dogs  that we treat our dogs better than most people treat their kids.

I heard the leave your pets behind thing earlier.  I said I would NEVER leave my cat.  No Freakin way.  I would be putting him to death.  He never goes outside, he would have no idea what to do and I could never EVER live with myself.  He would be stuffed into my shirt, my bag where ever but he would NOT be left behind.

I'm not much of an animal lover although our family has a cat.  I can't imagine if we had to leave her behind.  I'd be heartbroken.  What I find apalling it that people are being forced to leave at gunpoint.  They should realize though that it is for their own safety.  It's such a twisted mess.
