ariel70, the pear idea sounds good as does the cabbage. People often murder cabbage in the pot.

Yep, sure enuff. I forgot them. I pickle them a lot

Beetroot is also good served hot as vegetable with meat and potatoes.

Pickled beets are good, too. A few other seasonings for pickling include whole cloves, cinnamon stick, celery seed.
