Dirk

Thank you so much for sharing that with me.  That really made me smile.

Glad to see you back.

Military,
I have been away for some time, spending a holiday with my son at the seaside, together with my ageing parents. They are my biggest supporters still, but my mother's health is declining.
The American flag is presented every year at the 4th July, at the top of the univeristy library in Leuven, the town were I was born. Several American Universities raised funds to rebuild our library when it was bombed during the last war.
Take care.

Dirk

When I dropped it off, the Editor caught me on the street to hug me for it, so I am guessing they will run it LOL!  Thanks!

You ROCK lady!
I'm so proud of you for not just letting it pass. I'm the daughter of a Marine, the wife of a Vietnam Army veteran and the proud step-mom of another Marine. Thanks for standing up and speaking out. You touched my heart. All the best to your soldier.

I can't believe people are stealing flags. That's the most unbelievable thing I've ever heard. It makes my heart sink. I'm Canadian but my heart is with the American troops. They are risking their lives for freedom.

I have to wonder on that myself.  Our town has less than 3000 people and people talk...word will get around it always does.

Military Wife...Thank you for posting that letter. Its may enlighten those outside of your town as well. As for the flag...I wonder if the thief reads.

You were a very wise young man.  All any of our service members want is that the flag is respected...I am glad you recognized that.

When I was in high school, we had a Marine ROTC program that fed into the local colleges and then into the Marines (or straight in, if you didn’t want to go to college). I remember one day some punk had jimmied the lock on the flag pole and was in the process of stealing it when the ROTC instructor came into view. Gunnery Sergeant Malumphy, a 50 something year old Vietnam vet who had spent more than half his life in the Marine Corps. I have never seen such a verbal attack, and that kid deserved ever inch of it. He was probably 16 or 17, and he broke down crying after the first minute, with a swarm of high-schoolers gathering around. He was instructed to raise the flag back up to the top and show up to the school at 7AM every morning for the next month to be a part of the detail that raised it.

I wanted to cheer at first, but then realized something. He didn’t want the kid cheer wildly for the flag. Hell, he maybe didn’t even care if the kid ever celebrated the flag. But he’d be damned if that kid didn’t respect that flag, and the countless men and women who have given years of their life, and sometimes their life, so that flag to fly over the school.

And hey, wonderful letter =).

I highly doubt they will return the flag and I also doubt that those who know who did it (itty bitty town, someone knows) will turn them in.  The truth is it's not more than a very minor misdemeanor.  I tend to think it takes a special kind of theif to steal a flag.  Honestly, my hope is everytime they look at it, they choke!
