Majroj, if interviewed I will not blurt out every idea in my mind. My cover letter was quite artful--risky but heh, it is better to show some character.

Decshak, yes I have to reveal my hand to them somewhat. I know the competition is tough. Sometimes if you have shown a little more ingenuity or dedication that is what it takes to make the difference. Sometimes it is down to who you know. It will turn out as it is meant to

Elan27, that is life. Some ideas are best only as notions in the moment, beautiful thoughts to carry you through the day

Wildwoman, this week i have some energy so I am trying to run with it while it lasts. Feeling as I have lately, I must execute my ideas efficiently

Ohh yes, it is Friday the 13th

and we some fearsome wind and lightning storms headed this way.

Some risks are acceptable, but it would be extremely annoying if theft occured. Hopefully it won't and you'll get good assignments. Best Wishes May.

I meant to add too that very often many people have the same idea at the same time--it's only natural when events stir similar thoughts in people.

L.E.Gant, I agree that the ideas are no big deal. Anyone who gave the 45 minutes could do the same or better. I live with a pessimist who thinks of these things.

I know I have had some great ideas which I never acted on but others have translated into something meaningful.

The one thing I do know is that I am better at thinking up ideas when I am not in an office millpond. I need a long leash

My outlook is much the same as yours and I don't worry about it. My post was sparked by what my resident pessimist said to me. I too have seen people run away with ideas and then sink without trace. Of course some go through life stealing the ideas of others and do OK on it.

In a way, and I am sure this is something you will understand, I am not sure that a proper job is the best way to go for me. I am very independent and motivated and sometimes find an office environment stultifying. Again thank you for your generous comment

OK MayB - but I think I look pretty much the same... ;-)

Word.smith, there is no worst case scenario in this. It will work out for the best. If they are not nice people I will be well out of there

Temple, I always think that I must try. Some people are truly pessimistic. I try to limit the impact of their negativity on me

MerryAnne, well, well look at you. I do believe that this is a small risk and I am not a pessimist. I have some faith in people

Ginnieb, you are too kind but thank you. In a way to have a job would be too easy. My gut feeling is that I am meant to struggle

Well, it is so weird that the best of ideas, strike, when you ar at a dance party or you are admist a very very formal function! Ha! And by the time you reach home, and get to writing with a paper and a pen, its all gone down the drain. Not discouraging you Mayb, its just a personal experience, I thot I'd tell. But hey, u sure gonna b the lucky one! Trust me! Who knows Friday the 13th is just more than lucky for ya!

HMMMMMMMMM

What if you dazzled them with your cover letter and was artfully sketchy about your idea?

Sort of like Sally Rand...

Of course you'll have more ideas
and it IS in the execution. And I hope they're reputable. I'm hoping things turn out as you intend. Are you feeling better?

posted by Wildwoman_Laloba on May 13, 2005 at 9:16 AM | link to this | reply

You can't copywrite ideas, anyway. All the real work is in the execution.
You had to show them your ideas so they could get to know you.....

Some people write articles for newspapers and magazines because they
love the topic, such as my husband and both being a fireman and fishing.  It is possible to be a freelance newspaper reporter.  How well you write makes a lot of difference, but it is a certain style....for getting a job.  Also, with jobs as scarce as they are you don't know how many people are waiting in line or for how long, before you came along.  Jobs I've considered applying for have between 100 and 200 applicants, each....

I just realized that tomorrow was Friday the 13th!
It's usually lucky for me, I hope so, because I have some stuff going on tomorrow that could be good.  I hate people that like to take your wind away, just shoot you down.  I always thought it was because they can't try themselves.  You have .  Good luck to you!  You deserve it.

Jemmie, thanks. I don't really believe it but I realized that I was tempting fate by saying I would have more ideas. It suddenly hit me that I might not

Best of luck to you!

And a word of advice . . . don't believe in the Friday-the-thirteenth-bad-luck mumbo-jumbo!  For me, that day has never been anything but good luck!

MayB
Drive safely MayB.  Ideas?  I have pages of them as well, but if I don't make them real they are simply ideas.  For each one you throw out to seed, another ten will flourish.

posted by johnmacnab on May 12, 2005 at 8:06 PM | link to this | reply

As stated before:ideas are CHEAP! They come from what each of us know, and you can be sure that 99.999999% of us have the same ideas. SO what,if they "steal" them and run with them?

I've seen some of my ideas make billions (for other people). The only difference is that they took the ideas and turned them into reality, while I just came up with them.

And,as you commented somewhere, it only took you some 45 minutes to come up with three pages worth. And I'll bet that you discarded at least double that number while you put down those ideas.

It's one of those things you worry about early on

all the time.  In over 20 years, I've had it happen twice. It was done by the same person, the same publication at the same time.  Believe it or not, the Washington Post.  It was seriously nuts, and I know the Post people had no idea.  By the time I went through it, it was an intern or the like.  She was gone pretty promptly.

I have sent out hundreds of ideas nationally.  You may see an "idea" taken, but often they were working on the idea already, and that's why you didn't get it.  At first, it seems like people are taking your stuff, but after awhile, when you start sending out really specific things, most writers find out the ideas they thought were showing up all over the place were just that---ideas.  Now the thing that I had taken was very detailed.  It included an idea for a chart that listed each heading, the category, questions that would be in the chart.  I did all but draw it.  So when the article as well as the chart appeared, and then the idea I sent in the package appeared the following week...well, that was a no brainer.

I don't worry about sending out stuff at all nationally.  I probably would hesitate locally just because the level of people you are dealing with may not be as professional.  There's not much you can do about it, regardless.

Keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

At the very least, your prospective employer will think that you are chock full of ideas and that's a good thing. Worse case scenario, I don't want to think about. Keep positive thoughts.

That's the catch 22 MayB
you have to prove you have the ideas that they need, but risk the fact that they need them and may take them.

I am not an artist but I have about 50 cartoon ideas I want to sell to a cartoonist and I have one in mind but I worry about not selling them then having the ideas show up months later

Yeah, pitching ideas is such a risky business.
They are so easy to steal....who would know that they did not have the idea first? Scientists have to keep detailed journals to prove patent rights. I did once hahaha.I'd love to tell a story about a patent I have, but I am still chicken about revealing my secret identity.
