I remember that poem, Quirky. I relate: I get all choked up when my geraniums don't bloom. I take it very personally. How can you not? You're not crazy, unless you're poor, that is. If you're poor, you're crazy. If you're rich, you're well, odd but endearing.

Hot coffee on pansies?
It would make them shrivel up...you just felt this reaction in your heart and that is where you heard them. You are just sensitive and sympathetic. Not really crazy.
BTW a little spritz of water might have helped revive them.
