Hi Hollee!!
Thanks. Yeah, they are the kewlest! Why did you call yours Smudge? Did he have a smudge like our Smudge?

Justsouno,

Smudge is so mad at us! Tuesday, he had to donate blood and was being a pain so we had to sedate him. We figured we'd make the most out of sedating him so we cleaned his teeth while we had him knocked down. We found a bad tooth and pulled it. All of that night and Wednesday he snubbed us. Wouldn't talk to us or even LOOK at us!!

Taps, I've been meaning to ask you how that's going.

Thanks for the link!

Beautiful kitties, Spitfire.   One of these days when she is more settled in, I will take a pic of Pitiful.  Right now she is just getting over the trauma of all the changes and hides under Mark's bed a lot.   Go to Pitiful

Spitsy,

I just looked at the pix again.  That baby has sure got a Calico face, and some of the colors too.  That has got to be mixed in there.  Also, with the head butts--I know that all cats do that to a degree, but the Norwegian Forest ones have a special way of doing it.  They butt you with the top of their head just like they were little goats.  It's kind of different, and very noticeable.

Temple, it's funny we were talking about Smudge not having to

donate blood too often cause he just did today!

posted by SpitFire70 on May 3, 2005 at 5:11 PM | link to this | reply

No, I mean, my girls would rub, like normal kisses....like marking...
Petie does, too.  But Petie butts me with the very top of his head, no scent glands there.  Just..ooooh...Mommy!  BONK!  ::: mommy falls over :::  Good, not too much sticking for Smudge. :D  Only certain kinds of poking are good. ;)

posted by Temple on May 3, 2005 at 3:11 AM | link to this | reply

Temple, yeah, we let him out often (Smudge)
and we really only take blood from him when another cat needs a transfusion; on average maybe 8 times a year. The feline "head but" is common for most cat breeds. That's how they show affection and "mark" you with the side of their head or cheek.

Does Smudge get to walk around and play?
Or is he stuck in a cage all the time?  You said he was your blood donor....does that mean you have to stick him all the time....poor thing!  I feel bad for him.  Tommy Boy is really cute and seems really cool.  I like the last picture of him looking over his shoulder at you.  Petie must be that Norwegian tree cat thingy because he bonks me on the head with his head so hard all the time so hard he knocks me over!  I don't know why it doesn't hurt him.  :)  It's funny.  He's all black though with some white juuuuuust barely on the tips of his fur on his chest.

OBP, yes, Smudge got his name due to obvious reasons!
But Feline Leukemia is not as it is for humans. We don't actually know when Tommy Boy's Leukemia will begin to show signs. Regardless, that will be a sad time for all of us.  But, for now, we give him a happy and playful life that he deserves. He is so worth it. I swear, I'm not just saying that. If anyone saw him, they'd feel the same. He is beyond unique; beyond cool!! And sooooo humorously entertaining, too!

majroj, that is a rarity! Male calico cats, I mean!
Sorry he didn't live a full life, though.

Spit
I can see where you got the name for smudge.. they're all really pretty kitties, and they look very healthy. Is the cancer in remission of sorts? Vet medicine has come a long way..Thank God for people like you...

Maj,
I think you'r right about genetic problems.  They seem to get along real well, healthwise, until right at the end.  Then there is a problem that no vet seems able to diagnose, and they're gone.  I guess, in a way, that's good, but losing such a dear friend is always painful.    JJ

My mom had a calico male named Callie
He was a stray and lived to be at least ten years, but just went downhill, skin problems, maybe joints...bad genetic joo-joo.

JJ, yes, it is true that calico cats are always females.
There have been a few that were considered male, but that is very very rare. I've never seen a male calico. As far as Tommy Boy, I don't know what breed of cat he is; I just consider him totally kewl. He is one of the best natured cats I've ever met.

Spif,

Definitely a large part Norwegian Forest Cat.  They are B & W.  Does he like to bump you with the top of his head?  They do that too.

The spots are broken up with what looks like gray tabby stripes, and the super deluxe white is part of both Calicos and NFCs.  The face also has a Calico look.  A mixed up breed, but all of those that he has are fantastic cats.  I'm absolutely sure he is one giant sweetheart.

Do you know anything about Calico's genetics?  I have been told that they are always females, at least the more pure ones, but I was never sure whether to believe that.  Yet, I have known several of them, and they were all female.

I didn't care + or - about cats for a long time, be we's bros now.........    JJ
