Actually, the slave just fails to understand that he's a slave. He comes from a different culture and sees his Master as being enslaved to a court and set of ideas that take his Master's freedom. So Tris is trying to protect Alix, but Alix is trying to free his Master.

Its a weird, Ironic love isn't it? Master and Slave. Who would of thought that a slave would love, and be so loyal as a pet dog?
