my husband used to do that in his sleep.

After majoy dental reconstruction he could not do it anymore... but he never used his hands to help... he would just suck in his cheeks and chew away.

It did it when he was stressed... now he just whines.

Actually, the nail biting isn't a problem anymore--hasn't been for years and years now.  But the biting of my cheeks and lips is a big problem!  Though chewing gum is something I've never tried in order to stop myself!  That might just work!  I'll give it a try!  Thanks bunches!!!

Jemmie, what if you start chewing gum to try and stop from chewing the inside of your cheeks and lips...  I do that... i never thought it was an OCD...

As for biting your nails... I used to bite mine for years.... now i've stopped and ive noticed that its easy for me to bite them when they're unpainted... so keep your nails painted... good luck!

Actually, I grind my teeth too!  I used to have severe jaw pain from it.  My dentist had to fit me with a mouthpiece to wear at night to prevent me from doing that!  Interesting aside: my dental insurance wouldn't pay for the multi-thousand-dollar mouthpiece, but since I was the first patient my dentist tried this new piece on, he gave me that mouthpiece and all my previous unpaid dental work free!!!  Just because I was his guinea pig!  He's a great dentist--and not just because he's so nice.  He's actually a really great dentist!  And soooooooooooo handsome, too! hehe

Jemmie, I wondr if this might not be related to grinding of teeth which is also unconscious?  Could you try pressing your lips together and creating an air pouch inside where your teeth and gums meet.  It might provide the needed distraction, but don't start grinding your teeth.  Hey, I wish I could do something for you!  Take care.
